Illegal soundtracks?

Hi

I asked this before but I didn't get the answer.

This site hosts some Castlevania soundtracks.
I would like to know -  is it legal for the admins to host these soundtracks?
I'm just curious.

Thanks in advance.

Admins don't host 'em.
The forum does not either.
The site hosts the things that are out of print and too hard to find... though it also has some other stuff.

to answer the second part of your question, nope it's illegal.

there is no way to legally host a commercially released game soundtrack on a fansite. it would basically make the music available for everyone for free, so the companies that released it would lose money.

but it's just game music, so nobody cares. :o

Yeah, the only music you can legally host are remixes (or conversely, soundtracks that have been legally made available for redistribution). Even if the soundtrack is 20 years old and out of print, it's still illegal to distribute.

However, like Serio said, game companies and labels (unless they have the words 'Square' and 'Enix' in their names) don't care because the market is too small. You can't do that with mainstream media. Once in awhile though you'll see a dojin producer specifically request that his work not be distributed...

Capcom of America official stated fan sites can upload their game music as long as they are not doing so to say "this music sucks."

Sony is also somewhat notorious for DMCA'ing Guilty Gear gameplay videos off of YouTube based solely on the music.

And, yes, I really do mean the low-quality background music that gets further drowned out by blaring voice effects and sound effects and whatnot during combat.

And, yes, Sony is completely retarded.

My philosophy is:

If you already bought the game with said music, you shouldn't feel too bad about not paying for the music again just to get it on an official disc.

That is unless the company goes far out of its way to enhance the audio in some way.
