I don't really hang out in nerd circles because sometimes they're a little too nerdy—or more like just focused on one or two factions of nerddom and taking that to the extreme (whereas I'm fairly branched all over)—so I'm not familiar with guys scoffing at female gamers/nerds outside of the intrawiebz, but if that's really what goes down, I don't really get it. All my life I've always wanted to hang out with cute gals who are into all the geeky stuff that I like, because ideally I'd date or marry a friggin' fellow geek who hopefully shares enough common interests with me that we're not always at odds. I DUNNO, MAYBE THAT'S JUST ME THOUGH.

@sindra: lmfao pwnt, what a scumbag

I hear that. Would be kind of hard for a woman being with me, a CEO of a game company, and not having any interest in game sor related media I'd imagine, haha.

Well, there's a difference between being a part of the culture, and being understanding of it.

Great example of this was a friend from one of my groups that invited a bunch of us east coast peoples to his house for a long weekend gaming bonanza. About a dozen geeks (two of us were females) in a gorgeously furnished basement, with at any given time 4 consoles and at least one handheld all gaming at the same time. The host's wife introduced herself, packed up her things and spent the weekend over at her sister's place, because while she wasn't a gamer and didn't necessarily want to get knee-deep into our gamerthon...she was understanding that it was important to her husband that an event like that happen and cool with it all. (and since her house didn't get trashed, she's up for future events now!)

That's another side of the "gamer relationship" aspect: you don't have to really find a girl gamer who games with you and shares the gaming love, but find a girl who's open to the concept, understanding, and encouraging to your love of gaming. They do exist. Just have to find 'em.

Figured this was relevant to the discussion of having confidence and not running away to fantasyland (v-games, etc.):

My girlfriend is an occasional gamer. We'll co-op Borderlands, Castle Crashers, and a few other things, but she mostly just likes to watch me play stuff. It's weird, but kind of cool in a way (she also always guesses plot twists before I do, which is admittedly kind of annoying). It's even to the point where I'll suggest we get back into Dexter or watch a movie, but she'd much rather just watch me play a game and eventually doze off. She's also as excited as I am about the manchildcave dedicated to video games I have going on in the basement, so that's a plus!  :P

She doesn't really share my fanboyism for Castlevania, though. She thinks the premise is cool, and even shares my enthusiasm for collecting stuff (if only a little bit), but I don't think she has the desire to play any of the games.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

I don't have a problem with people not understanding why I love videogames in general. I just hate when they say it's kiddy stuff or when they say for me to grow up, which obviously trigger a "fuck you" reply or something similar.

I had luck to found someone who, even though isn't really into videogames, accept my hobby, just like I accept her differences. :)

For Castlevania, in specific... I have 3 friends who loves Castlevania since SOTN. After playing it, they proceeded to know the series (through emulators or the actual hardware) and still love the series, specially the music. It's great to discuss with them, even though we have different preferences (we all were dissapointed by LoS though, specially on the music department).

This is something I would say and I respect that. To me your spouse or partner or whatever should be your very best friend.

For the original thing. My sister is a huge CV fan, my mother (while maybe not the women you were talking about) is enough of a CV fan that she can quote the opening of SotN and other CV quotes. In fact my sister posted about CV today on facebook and my mother posted a CV quote to it. (but probably because my sister and I quote CV), I have a very good lady friend who is a CV fan and comes to me for CV advice and finally I met a girl this year who has shown real interest in CV. My point is girls who like CV exist. I would say just keep looking.

Me: Castlevania is an awesome series about vampires!
She: Like... Twilight?
Me: Doh! ... More like Bram Stoker's Dracula.
She: Doh!... Never heard about it. That's it? ...
Me: Let's talk about cats from youtube...

It's always like that.. I understand your pain, jestercolony..,.

@sindra: Yeah, thats kind of what I meant there, but wasn't very clear. I want at least respect for the medium. She doesn't have to like it, or be a gamer persay. But if she looks down on it, or even worse tries to force/encourage me out of it, then we got problems.

Yeah that's one thing I've noticed some nerds doing and I don't really understand, wanting your partner to be a clone of yourself when it comes to interests, hobbies and worldviews. I guess it comes from a lack of social interaction because that would be really boring. Part of the joy of a relationship is the differences. You don't have to share or enjoy all of each others hobbies but you do need to respect them. And just like with other close friends with time you probably will get each other interested in new things, my girlfriend got me into gaming and I got her into riffing on terrible old movies ala MST3K, though the Cinema Snob really helped with that one XD.

PS-

Well I'd say that's the wrong attitude to start out with. Just talk to people, if you're not comfortable around women find women who are interested in the same things you are and that will make it easier. But love isn't always or even usually something that spontaneously happens, and you can't force it. Don't have the attitude of "I'm going to go and find the one, we'll date for x months and then have x number of babies in x years." just have the attitude of "I'm going to make some friends and have fun."

Clone of, no. Sharing some similar interests, yes. A certain level of similarity helps to draw people together. It's no use being with somebody if you can't both take joy in the same activities.

As fer da comic, it's just comedy.
