I'm really looking forward to this one. One thing I especially appreciate about the Empires subseries of Dynasty Warriors is that it really learns from its mistakes. 4E was a great start, and then 5E definitely improved upon it, despite being a small change. And just as DW6 was a HUGE change from DW5, the same goes for 6E from 5E. All in all, 6E did just as many things right as it did wrong.
The entirety of the Empire mode of 6E was dramatically streamlined. You had dramatically less control over your kingdom than you did in previous entries, and in the end, it boiled down to two things: 1) select policy, and 2) fight a battle. That was it. However, in defense of 6E, just like DW6, this game gave that "battlefield feeling" far better than other games in the franchise. Like, you really FELT like you were in a war. You'd see other soldiers building siege weapons, breaking through gates, placing ladders to climb over walls, and at the same time the enemy forces were firing cannons in defense, and sending down soldiers to fight back. And even enemy officers were on the same level as your player character, and running into more than one really SUCKED. Still, though, the point stands that the entire experience was overall streamlined and freedom was taken away from you.
And in comes 7E, and it gives the entirety of Empire mode a complete overhaul, and you're in COMPLETE control of your empire. Now THAT was fun, despite the fact that armies in battle weren't nearly as interactive as they were in DW6. You were given more freedom in the way you built and ran your kingdom, and even on the creation of your own custom characters. Starting out as a wandering ronin and working your way to becoming the emperor was FUN, not a damn hassle like it was in 6.
8E is showing a LOT of promise, by delivering that, with a LOT more. I mean... they even hinted at you being able to create a story for your character and empire. THAT sounds exciting.
tl;dr, I'm looking forward to Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires a lot.
