Devil May Cry / SotN connection

Okay, so my brother is convinced that Devil May Cry started life as a sequel of sorts to Symphony of the Night (rather than a -very- early build of RE4), citing an article he read "somewhere" online about six years ago.

He goes on to say that this is all the more evident when you compare the final boss in DMC to Dracula in SotN.

Has my brother flipped or is there any truth to this?

Devil May Cry started development as Resident Evil 4.  Once it was decided that the concept was too unlike Resident Evil, it was made its own game.

It boggles the mind to think your brother thought it could have been a Castlevania, though.  Among other things, Konami and Capcom are entirely different developers.

I on the other hand can totally see the face value of this misunderstanding, seeing as how Dante looks like every God-damned feakin' protagonist AYAMI KOJIMA HAS EVER DESIGNED FOR CASTLEVANIA!  :P

Well, it's no secret that DMC was inspired by CV.

There also may be a heavy influence, at least for Dante's original character design, on Alucard from Hellsing.  Diferent color guns, renaissance get-up, etc.

Lots of people viewed DMC as a CV in 3d at first. I sort of did, not a definite replacement though.

I remember getting DMC becuase it was the closest thing to Castlevania on the PS2 at the time. It had a very gothic vibe in the first game but I like how they moved from that to the more post-modern thing in DMC2 and 3.

You forgot Juste and Hector - maybe Isaac too while yer at it - AND you neglected to post the 3D renderings. Still, give Ricky n' Sy white hair and all there is left to say 'tis- - Case. And Point.

But let us not stop there:

Dayyyyum. It's almost like any white-hair hero must be a Dante rip-off (hell, even those who look radically different must be), even if effiminate white-hair heros are seemingly recurring motiffs in Japan.

Case. And Point.

Dante was designed WELL before Juste, Hector, and Isaac...
And the only similarites are him and Juste where red.  Him and Isaac have a similar hair cut.  Him and hector.... have nothing.
