the first Castlevania game I played was the original NES game.  but i never owned it, i played it at a friends house.  never did get very far into it as a kid, mostly replayed the first two areas over and over again, but man, did that game ever set my imagination on fire.  i remember drawing pictures of the enemies in day care and humming the tunes while i couldn't play it.  feels weird to actually be able to "get" anywhere in the game now as an adult.

My first playthrough was on the GBA rerelease of Castlevania 1. Back in High School, I could beat the game over a lunch break.

Nowadays.... boooy howdy I suck!

How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Castlevania 4 is still my favorite game of all time and its inspired me to this day.

I was like 4 and we had our SNES, N64 and GBAs. My bro and I would play it a lot, but usually I'd watch him play till he got mad and quit and would let me play  ;DD He played a lot of Mario andSuper Ghouls n Ghosts, a game that made him tear his hair out (amazing game but follows the franchise difficulty). Then he'd sometimes play what we called "Castlevania".

We thought it was boring compared to the faster games we had, and he never bothered beating the first stage. He'd also get made and throw controllers and even the games if he died... Castlevania had the top half of the cart broken off.

I saw it there, decided to play it, and became fascinated. One time I even watched the whole intro and learned the story, was so inspiring. I told my bro next time I saw him " Did u know you dont save a princess in Castlevania?" He goes "Really?"

It was so dark and violent compared to the other games. Here, kill fucking Dracula or EVERYONE in Transylvania will die. Pretty hardcore for some young kids. I remember thinking of the game in higher detail and getting scared one night ;D

It was the first game of beaten, and each stage was so different and my imagination just raced the whole time. I loved the story, Simon Belmont was my Mario, and Dracula was my Bowser XD One day I asked my mom what the number on the label was, and she told me "4". I couldn't wait to play the others!!

Then my younger bro, who knew I was obsessed with CV, got home and showed me CV64, which he claimed my cousin gave him. Again, stil love this game today, and was so cinematic. Didn't have a memory card so I had to beat the game with each character in one sitting XD I still know the levels like the back of my hand. I can't help but hate the hate this game still gets. Ppl just follow the crowd and take the AVGN so seriously without even playing.

Then Circle of the Moon, then Castlevania Double Pack (Aria was the only one my bro would play cus u got swords XD) and then my cousins showed me the first 3 on an NES emulator.

CV is still my favorite series, and I remember it so well as my inspiration for wanting to get into game design when I was young, and now I've switched to wanting to do film and draw on the side.
