I'm glad to see so much support for Mario 3 here.  It's not my favorite game, but it usually takes top spot on my Best Games Evarr list.  It did so much without straying too far from the Mario formula set by Super Mario Bros., and it did it all on the same hardware.  Super Mario World is pretty excellent too, but it had much more powerful hardware to work with.

That poll needs to be updated to add Super Mario Galaxy 2.  IT'S SUCH A GOOD GAME, GUYZ!
That being said, SMB3 still gets my vote because 1. the suits, 2. the plethora of platforming stages, 3. the minigames, and 4. the overall variety.

I think I've enjoyed SMB3 the most since it was such a dynamite game back in the day...and still is for that matter. I had a whole lot of little gimmics to it that did not really transfer to other later entries. I think SMW could've benefited from such gimmics as well. They certainly could've kept all the powerups that were seen in SMB3 and that would've made SMW even better. I also still enjoy the original SMB as it was my first NES game expearience. SMB2 japan... I only played it just to unlock all the different worlds... It was pure torture, all that cussing and shouting... memories. Six golden coins was a good one too. The took the SMW sprites, adapted them for gameboy and wolla! I don't think I ever beat Wario though. From what A n t r a x x said about SMG, I should give that one a try one of these days. There are so many good Mario games out there that I can't really pick a fave. By the way The Last Belomnt... You forgot about SMB Wii  ;)

At least the poll's resurrection allowed me to vote for SMW2: Yoshi's Island. Best game in the world. :o No game excites me as much as that one, not even SMB3 or the first two Donkey Kong Countrys (though those CERTAINLY come close).

I started replaying the first one.  I totally did not know that once you get all the secrets in a stage, you get an exclamation point after the stage name (I did know that for DKC2 but I didn't know they had implemented that back in DKC1).

Yoshi's Island DS is pretty cool. I wasn't very impressed by it when it came out, and barely played it, but I recently started it up again and am quite enjoying myself. Doesn't hold a candle to the first one, but it's extremely silly to expect it would—which I inevitably did upon release, but have since gotten over the fact that it's not gonna be as great as the first one. Still really fun, though. Even the baby-switching doesn't annoy me like it did when it came out.

It's a better sequel than Yoshi's Story, that's for sure.

Super Mario World got my vote, back when I was like 4 (which wasnt so long ago) I played this game to death. It was incredibly fun, although it was a bit too easy (there was one point where I had like, 100 lives).
Come on by to my YouTube Channel for Castlevania walkthroughs and much more!

I voted Mario 3 (even though I adore the first RPG title), and I guess it's because I always enjoyed playing as a plumber in cat ears who knew how to fly. Good times. LOL.

A racoon actually. Or in Japan, a tanuki. Like Mario in his Tanuki suit which he can turn into an invincible statue for about two seconds.

as much as I love the classic Mario titles I'm going to vote for a 3D title, and my favorite is...Super Mario Sunshine! that was like a floating dream to me, the whole cleaning duty was addictive to me the worlds were dreamy if that makes sense.
I tried enjoying Mario Galaxy and even though it was a good game, I could not enjoy it as much as I did with Sunshine I wish I could. I think one of the reasons is that I eventually got tired of the space theme and the problem is that the whole game and stages were space themes, so there wasn't any getting away really.

never knew Sunshine was that unpopular.

Heh, yeah. Describing Sunshine's levels as "dreamy" strikes me as odd, as the environments are probably the most down-to-earth and mundane in the entire series. :p I'm just not too big on some of the level designs. I don't hate the game, and am quite fond of it, but I'm not wild over it. I thought Galaxy was a huuuuge step in the right direction in terms of game design.

oh yes, Galaxy was a very unique game with great level designs that were new, since your platforming through round planets and all. Mario is supposed to fun after all.
well what I really liked about sunshine is the theme of the game really, which as obvious as it sounds...sunny, I like the sunny beaches and water designs and it's importance in gameplay, and I especially liked the haunted hotel level, with it's crimson sunset in the horizon and cold sand on the beach, last but not least, the haunted hotel in the center with it's creepy puzzles.  ;D
I think Sunshine managed to "whip" a certain part of my brain that I really liked, that's the whole dreamy aspect to me.
