Contra: Rebirth (New 2009 Game!)

"Contra: Rebirth" has been announced for WiiWare in Japan for a release on May 12th. There are four screens currently available (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174122). It is an all-new game, though visually it resembles something in-between Contra III (SNES) and Contra 4 (DS). No overseas release date has been announced yet...

While I am super-excited to see another new Contra game, it's coming on the heels of a very solid (if not very strong) Contra 4 for Nintendo DS. I just hope it won't rest too much on the series' laurels. What surprises me most is the video game media outlets are treating this as if Contra 4 never happened, which is a disservice to that entry.

There's also a Salamander Rebirth coming along as well, that one in particular has me stoked, but I'm not sure if that one will leave Japan.

So does this mean it's being developed in Japan, and not by Wayforward? Because the job they did with Contra 4 was incredible.

Either way, the screenshots look great, and I'll pick it up when it hits the US.

I love Contra. It's the one series I truly kick ass at playing.   :D
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

Just to error on the side of caution, a US release has not been announced yet, so we don't know for sure if it will come over anytime soon.

No kidding?  That would be amazing, though we probably wouldn't see it over here.  I just imported the Salamander Collection for PSP, and I'm loving it.

I really, really hope this makes it over here. Though, I'd be happier if it gets released on PSN and Xbox live as well, MM9 style.

While I'm all for another contra release...this particular game just feels almost empty and graphically a step backwards. It sounds as though the music was ported straight from the original arcade and the clutter that made contra...well, contra is not just not there. They should have left it on the DS or some other graphically advanced system as the wii just doesn't seem to compliment the game in the right way. I do however like the glow that comes off the firepower you unleash on your enemies so I guess there's some good news in that department. As well as the type of weapons design that we saw in contra 4 such as the laser. :)

Hope the visuals are more towards CIV than CIII. CIII looked horrible for the most part. No color variation.

I was amped up at first, but after sitting through a YouTube blazethrough, I was left a bit dismayed at its Crayola presentation and PoR-quality level pastes.

Girl-Browny was an interesting look, but Contra could've ReBirthed a LOT harder.

Not really thread necromancy if its still on the front page right?
Either way, after being pleasantly surprised at CV's ReBirth treatment, I tried Contra's. I really liked it. It was pure contra through and through, right in line with Contra3. The only thing that I really missed was upping the power of a weapon by collecting it again.

But right from the get go it's over the top and crazy fun.

I haven't gotten Contra ReBirth yet.  I got CV, and Gradius and was pleased with 'em.  Does Contra ReBirth use the Arcade-like Synth Chiptune stuff, as well?  Any classic tunes?

They should have left it on the DS or some other graphically advanced system as the wii just doesn't seem to compliment the game in the right way.

Wait...what? Are you implying the DS is more graphically advanced than the Wii? *Mind blown*

It's not that at all. The reason the visuals look so poor is because they're low-res, just like with Castlevania ReBirth. It honestly looks like GBA development tools were used. A properly-done pixel game on the Wii would look astounding, particularly if they go full 480 res—which would be a looooot of work, so I doubt that'd ever happen (unless they didn't draw it pixel-by-pixel).

And I love the music. And yes, Jorge, it has the same sound system as the new CV. As for classic tunes? Can't think of any offhand, but there probably are some.

Totally awesome game. I love it a lot. Very chaotic.

For awesome examples of great done-right 2D animations on Wii, you can check out WayForward (same people who did Contra 4)'s "A Boy and his Blob" for Wii:

Or, you can check out Nintendo's own "Wario Land - Shake It!":

For a good Wiiware title that uses great 2D, you can check out "World of Goo":
Although, to be fair, "World of Goo" is also a PC title (but the Wii version has excellent graphics asa well.

I own all three of these games, and the 2D artwork and animation are topnotch.
