Dumbed down gameplay? ...There is swinging and whipping and spinning and jumping. Haha and since when has CV ever had a very in depth fighting system. Not much to dumb down.
With all due respect, I hope Konami is listening. This is key: Any hint of platforming so far has kind of looked like its "on-rails" (IE: you move toward an area and you jump like in 3D Zeldas, or you press a button and there's an event cinema scene of you swinging into a church. Skill-based platforming--the hallmark of the series that's been sadly missing for many years--hasn't appeared yet.
And, about the combat: Castlevania was never supposed to be about throwing your character into a flat arena and swarming him with enemies. It's skill and timing-based battles, not God of War Kratos free-for-alls. The combat looks too out of control; the character is overpowered with all the 3D IGA-era combos. Where's the room for "skillfully" augmenting yourself with Sub-Weapons? With all the superhero-style whip fighting, Sub-Weapons are almost irrelevant here.
Now, as for the monster climbing/riding that made up chunks of the trailer...see reply to below:
Here's an article with a good recap of the storyline:

I'm actually intimidated at the thought of playing this game. The giant creatures look very daunting (how in the heck are you supposed to fight THEM?) not to mention the high speed adventures on the back of a wolf. It doesn't look like it's in my comfort zone like Curse of Darkness was. Way more exciting actually. It'll be a good ride.
This was done in Shadow of the Colossus, climbing giant Colossi and/or riding on the backs of boar/lion-shaped running beasts that tried to throw you off their backs. I'm not saying this can't be a part of the gameplay (I liked the wrestling with the whip from afar near the end of the trailer), but it shouldn't be the big "ah-ha!" the developers go with. "Size" isn't the end all, be all.
...And to reiterate what was said before, this game needs more Castlevania flavor. "Rebirth" or not, if you disregard what "Castlevania"
IS (Gothic Horror, not Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter Fantasy), you've basically made another IP.
(It'd be like making a Metal Gear set in the Wild West). I
seriously appreciate that LoS is seemingly not getting bogged down in the meandering and/or goofy RPG elements that have pushed the series further away from its atmospheric action-platforming origins (not to say that there isn't valid room for C64-style puzzles here and there). However, outside of the whip, most everything that separated Castlevania from God of War and Devil May Cry is being heavily blurred with what I've seen of LoS so far.
I
want to be excited, but I'm very nervous this game was an excuse to sell more Lord of Shadows discs by slapping on the more widespread name of Castlevania. If LoS is
going to be Castlevania, efforts have to be made to make it allude to the
heart of Castlevania: Candles, Bats, Skeletons, Medusa Heads, Zombies, Vampires, Aqueducts, Clocktowers, Bone Pillars, Ghost-filled Abodes, Bone Dragons, Crumbling Bridges, Death Pits, Spinning Platforms, Falling Spikes on Chains, Sub-weapons like Holy Water, Knives, & Boomerangs, Memorable Music (not Hollywood cut-and-paste), and so on.
I apologize for the length; none of this is meant in hate at anyone. It's just constrictive criticism of the game shown in the trailer and promotion materials.
