You see that add on the top of the page advertising Shadow Complex? Download it. Play it. Enjoy the first true next-gen metroidvania title, and not just because it's similar to Castlevania. Enjoy it because it's one of the best metroidvanias in existence.

I'd say it's more like Super Metroid than Castlevania myself. I wouldn't compare it to Castlevania at all.

I only mean the core gameplay (exploration, upgrades, XP). Otherwise, especially in Aesthetics, it's completely different.

Basically, take Metroid's shooting and CastleVania's leveling up system, add innovative twists (attacking enemies in background, flashlight eliminates being in the same room searching for item X for 10 minutes).

Despite some reviews (cough, 1up, cough), it's much more than a simple clone. It actually refines much of the formula for the better while maintaining a compelling experience.

I LOVE this game so far. I'm not very far yet but I really like the level design and the game looks gorgeous! The attention to detail is absolutely breathtaking. It's lightyears ahead of both Metroid and Castlevania in this area. Yeah, the game is a lot like Super Metroid, but I can easily see a new Castlevania done in this style (with gothic environments and stuff).

There is a glitch in the demo so that if you die just as you beat that robot spider thing it will make so that when you respond and go back to the spot where you fight it, it will be dead and you can play the entire game, but you can't save.

I've watched my brother play the game. I was definitly seeing a Metroid-type play in the structure of the game itself but even now I still can't see it being similar to CV SotN. Personally if I were working at Nintendo I would make the next Metroid game in this exact way. Not like the Prime series where it's first person. But in good-old 2.5D; no haggling.

The game is sick. The story is fun to follow and the game play is a perfect 2D-ish game.
I hope Metroid: Other M plays like this. That will be AWESOME!

The game is BAD ASS. I downloaded it the day it came out I believe. While I'll never like it as much as Super Metroid, or SotN (it just doesn't have that music, and style). It's def awesome. I wish they would make more games like this, or just more 2D gameplay style games these days. Thanks for the Klonoa remake on Wii Namco. Any way. I was playing it a bit the other day. I still need to do the Walk on Water achievement... Oh, the Gold Guns are sweet too. He looks bad ass when you finally get your suit all the way.
