I wonder what the screen sizes on the 3DS will be. I highly doubt they'll be as big as what the DSi XL has—and even if the screens were as big, regular DS games won't fill the whole area due to the higher resolution of the 3DS. So, I'll probably still get an XL eventually, just to play DS games on mammoth screens.

The Nikkei also feels comfortable enough reporting that the 3DS will feature improved wireless communication speed and battery life, but that its dual screens will be slightly smaller than that of the Nintendo DSi XL, due in North America on March 28

Ah, see, I can't read.

It isn't your fault.  The screen size quote is from a newer Kotaku article that was posted a couple hours ago

Still, even with a slightly smaller screen than the XL, the resolution may very well be much higher, so who knows how small DS games will be on it? Unless, as said earlier, they implement an optional stretching featuring (or whatever you would call that; it's not exactly stretching, or is it?).

I really want me an XL, but it'll have to wait. Low on $$$ what with the Castlevania soundtrack box ($250) and the Coil live DVD box ($370)—which is a literal handcrafted box, woo.

I would love to see a new Castlevania game on it, hell it's pretty much a given that Konami will make one.

Please let Metroid Dread be a launch title.

So... Can some one please explaain the compatability of the games for the all the different DS systems that we have now? I'm confused.

Can I play my original DS games on anything besides DS and DS lite?

Will DSi and DSi XL games work on the 3DS???

If both answers to those questions are "no" and a CV game is not announced for DSi or DSi XL, then I should just wait and see if a CV comes out for 3DS???

I was also going to ask how the rumors of a "DS2" fit into this mess, but I don't want to know...it's too bumble-phuked.

The 3DS sounds like it's the DS2, basically. It's the second full-fledged DS system.

All DS games will play on any DS system—DS, Lite, DSi, XL. (Well, not ALL, since some, like Guitar Hero, require the GBA slot, which only the DS and Lite have.) DSi games (which I believe are only downloadable at this point) will not play on the DS or Lite, but will on everything else, including the 3DS. Or so it sounds.

I imagine the games for the 3DS will resemble this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_P4gyjf5tQ

I'm sure it'll be a hell of a lot more advanced than that, but it could very well be something akin to that. Though I'm certain they'll do something with the screens themselves.

All I know is I hope it's something more than just some cheap gimmick and is actually implemented well.

I still have faith in Nintendo even if their first-party support for the Wii has for the most part been nothing but catering to the casual gamers. Certain games have used the Wii remote to great effect, same with the DS. I generally see their hardware developments as more innovative than gimmicky.

I think it's Dawn of Sorrow that you might have to worry about being able to play on the DSi or DSi XL.  Part of the original DoS cartridge was programmed to be able to detect if you had Aria of Sorrow in the Game Boy Advanced cartridge slot.  This might make it not work on a DSi, which doesn't have a Game Boy Advanced slot.  In another thread (I'm too lazy to look for it), someone said that the reason they released a new DSi version of Dawn of Sorrow in Japan was because DoS wouldn't work on the DSi.  I don't know if this is a problem with the North American version or if this is really a problem.  I don't think DSi would have any trouble playing PoR or OoE.
