Nintendo DSi XL

Looks like the DSi XL is coming out this month.  This is the first I have heard of it, but I'm a little bit interested.  The three DSi Castlevania titles all had "great graphics" and I've heard many say how they're comparable to Symphony of the Night.  But on the small DS screen, it's really kind of hard to appreciate it.  Of course, I'd like to be able to play it on a TV set the most, but due to the nature of the DS, I don't have much hope that will "ever" happen (legally).  So this may be the next best thing that will ever be offered.

A couple questions:
How does the size of the DSi XL's screen compare to the original DS (which I have).  I am grateful for the DS that I have, as I appreciate its width that are easier for "adult" hands to use than the DSi.  And I'll always keep my DS handy, as its the only way I can currently play a Game Boy Advanced title with a back light.

I remember asking about a new release for Dawn of Sorrow in Japan and finding out that it was re-released in DSi format because the current cartridges don't work on DSi.  Would this be the case for the DSi XL in America?  As an aside, if these games won't work on DSi, a normal DS better be able to communicate with a DSi with the Wifi.

Answer 1: It's like 70% bigger indeed, if you look at games blogs, they are very impressed by ho big (and heavy) it is.
And yes, DS XL cartriges are DSi type.

Everything comes full circle

well, i'm certainly glad they're releasing the DSi XL before releasing a DSi ware Castlevania game, which would have "forced" me to buy the first DSi.  i guess i'll wait until i hear anything on a downloadable DSi Castlevania before actually buying a second DS, but i am tempted at the prospect of playing the DS CVs games on a larger screen.

i've always been put off by the trend of handhelds getting smaller and smaller, when i thought the originals were just fine and comfortable.  glad to see the trend in reverse for once.  guess i don't care about portability, since i'm just playing it at home 98% of the time (wishing it was on console).

Isn't there rumors of a DS "successor" to be revealed at E3 later this year? If it's true (and probably is) you should wait until that happens instead of purchasing the DSi XL..

This is the first I've heard of the DSi XL. Those bigger screens look marvelous. I may get one eventually, but I'm so low on funds right now.
Oh yeah, and also:

Before anyone who already has a Nintendo DS or DSI purchases an XL, should do some research Nintendo's new 3ds

 :o

1) Two screens, with virtually no seam between them when open
2) Screens are higher resolution, but exact resolution is unknown
3) Powered by nVidia Tegra
4) Roughly as powerful as a Gamecube, and apparently similar to program for
5) Uses carts - believed to be same size as DS/DSi carts, only with different guts
6) Due out in 2010 in at least one territory

Once again :o

Oh, so the 3DS is the next "new" Nintendo handheld console?  That sounds like a great successor to the DS line.  It'll be great for casual games.  Man, until I've seen it for myself, it'll be hard to say if it'd be something worth trying out on a Castlevania game.  Castlevania certainly doesn't need 3D and any attempts to utilize it might be rather lame and gimmicky like using the Stylus at the end of boss battles in Dawn of Sorrow.  It might be novel for some visual effects, but whether it would enrich the game play experience or be an annoying distraction is hard to say.  But another thing about the new 3D is that it has higher processing power and better resolution.  That might be the reason to make a new Castlevania game for it, with perhaps the 3D stuff added as an after-thought?  Of course, they might feel "pressured" to utilize its 3D effects like they were the Stylus in DoS, so it'll probably use it somehow.  But will it be an optional gimmick thing that you could disable, or would the game be built around it?  Then there's the whole question about how 3D would be used.  Would it be like Dracula X Chronicles for general style with certain stuff in the foreground and background?  Maybe it could still be sprite based, but with extra layers using sprites or polygons in the foreground and background.  Could it be a full 3D game with a behind-the-user perspective like Castlevania 64?  I imagine that a slanted overhead view (like Gauntlet) would work best for a fully integrated 3D Castlevania game.

I still might consider buying the DS XL.  For me, the whole point of getting it is to enjoy the current DS Castlevanias more.  I don't think playing them on the 3DS will make them any more enjoyable.  So its then just down to how much $$ I'm willing to spend and when.

Sounds ridiculously badass. Even moreso that it's Gamecube powerful and somehow uses cartridges. If this DS doesn't get a port of the Resident Evil Remake, I'll be mad.

I would love to see a new Castlevania game on it, hell it's pretty much a given that Konami will make one.

Please let Metroid Dread be a launch title.
