Which do you think is harder, CVIII or DXC?

I find these two incredibly punishing. For DXC it's mostly the bosses. But in my opinion CV III takes the cake (especially the stage with 3 coffins), I found it impossible to clear the game without save states. But maybe because I took the harder route.

For the stage 3 boss (Coffins) It's usually best to use Sypha's fire magic. It does wonders for you and hell for the mummies. The cyclops you can just throw boomerangs or axe's at him from a reasonable distance. CV3 does heve some very unforgiving stage designs that make the game a masochistic nightmare to get through. But I've been playing it so often that it's become second nature to me. For DXC, the only real problems I have involve the fight with Death (unless you have Maria and her Dragon item crash). occasionally I'll have the odd struggle here and there but for the most part CV3 is more painful then DXC.

The only time I struggle with DXC is in alternate stage 5 and that's just getting through the level with the axe and enough health so I can kill the hydra. III on the other hand, well lets just say I have a lot of stair cases and bone pillars to confront... ::)

Castlevania 3 is way harder. Its tough and its usually the doppleganger that drives me to finally turn it off
What a horrible night to have a curse!

CVIII by far, it didn't take me too long to beat DXC.

I say CVIII as well. Very difficult but still an epic and amazing game. It's still one of my favs in the whole series, despite it's tendency to cause much controller-whipping and wall-punching  :P

Oh...I see. I didn't try Sypha. I used Trevor throughout the game, which is stupid I guess. Yeah, the hostile environment in CV3 makes everything even more painful. Beats even Ghouls n Ghosts. I don't understand why they have to make it so hard back in those days. Didn't they have people to playtest it?

CvIII definitely. Such a nice, challenging game too. Something  most games these days lack.

I echo the others, CVIII, hands-down! I'm pretty much as casual a gamer as can be, and DXC, even the alternate stage, didn't take that long to beat(or get used to). CVIII, to this day, is still one of the only CV games I've never actually beaten. Particularly the last couple or five stages nearing Dracula are, IMO, some of the most nail-biting stages I've ever played in the entire series.

Before I even got a chance to play the original RoB, I used to hear it was also a pretty tough game, but I played through that one in one sitting. Easy pie! DXC, the arranged version, took a little longer, but once you get used to some of the boss patterns, it's simple stuff. Of course, SotN was always simple.

That was the idea of classic video games. Most games that weren't rpg's or adventure games were only about 40 minutes to an hour or so long. The high difficulty would enhance that time and force the players to memorize patterns and learn better timing to survive. CVIII is difficult yes, but after a TON of playthroughs everything starts to click and you become better at the game and might eventually beat it. It was difficult yes, but a fair difficulty that could be beaten if mastered correctly. I never felt like any area in this game was anywhere NEAR as painfully irritating as the 5th stage of CV1, with all the axe armors and Medusa heads.

Personally, I thought that CV2 was the easiest...well once you understand how it works that is.

I actually voted for DXC.  I know people talk about CV3 being hard a lot, but I never thought it was that tough.  I find Chronicles, Bloodlines, CV1, Dracula XX SNES, Rebirth, and DXC to all be harder than CV3.  Maybe I'm just funny like that, as I'm obviously in the minority.

I find Castlevania III to be more challenging because of the sudden stoop of difficulty later on (especially the less hits you can take in the US version), plus the length of stages and the hazards they have.

The thing about Dracula X is while there's some rough spots, the stages are much shorter. The bosses are definitely harder though by a small margin.
A wild Ralph appears.
