I like 3 equally for 3 different reasons...

1. Drac's Curse, for fucking rocking hard and mastering the action genre on limited hardware, pushing it's graphical, musical, and gameplay boundaries to the max.

2. CV4, for take everything from part 3 and taking it to the next level. Haunting music, dark atmosphere, and lots of little animated nuances made this a masterpiece with plenty of replay value.

3. SotN, because of the same reason as CV4... taking it to the next level, while still being loyal to the mechanics that started the series.

So that may be a cop out because I can't narrow it down, but so what? SotN is probably my overall favorite, but I prefer CV4 because it rocks and I can play it through in one sitting. You have to get involved with SotN, make a several hour (or day) commitment to the journey... And sometimes I just wanna kick ass through Transylvania.

I love all the side-scrolling ones like SotN.

Hmm... tough question. I can't pick just one, as that's always my problem when selecting favorites, so here:
The Original, Drac's Curse, SotN, HoD, CoD.

I personally don't have a favorite Castlevania, I like to play all Castlevanias where you aren't limited to use only whips.

Yes, I like those too. Whips are the most fun in 3D. I feel like it's very difficult to attack with a whip in 2D. It limits my abilities.

Tie between AoS and SotN. AoS has a great story, and the soul system, and Alucard. SotN also has a great story, and a huge variety of weapons and useable items, spells and familiars, and Alucard

I would have to break it down from classic style to metroidvania style as well w/o going mad.  As far as the Classics go my favorite is be Super Castlevania IV. Never played Rondo of Blood and the whole emulation thing is way too complicated for me to figure out to begin with.  I am hoping they release Dracula X on the Virtual Console for the Wii, thats probably my only real chance of experiencing it.  I think SCIV is always gonna be my favorite because it was what made me fall in love with Castlevania and at the age of only 7 years old it was very challenging for me to beat.  I remember when I did I jumped up and paused the game and ran out like a nerd to my friend's house and was like "I beat it I beat Castlevania!" they probably thought I was stupid.  Castlevania III is probably better though it just didn't have the same effect eventhough its an amazing NES title.

As far as Metroidvania style goes thats really tough,  technically Symphony of the Night is still my favorite Metroidvania but Dawn of Sorrow is giving it a very big run for its money right now.  I think Dawn of Sorrow does so much right, complain all you want about the game I think its very good but I got to beat the game before I can start to make a decision.  Symphony is still my favorite though.

Symphony from the new era; Dracula's Curse from the old.

I think AOS features some of Michiru Yamane's weakest compositions (other than Destined Cruz and Top Floor). Also the castle layout wasn't all that great. DOS is better IMO, especially because of the tri-character extra mode; which is still the best extra mode ever, if you ask me.

But yeah it's cool it introduced the soul system, though, and the ending was kinda cool.
