Screw Final Fantasy! Anyone tried Fallout?

I'm playing Fallout 2, and I'm totally addicted. It's like an RPG, but for adults.
No magic or wizards or "save the princess" quests or any of that crap.
Instead, you've got a dark, post-apocalyptic world filled with drugs, gangsters, whores and slave traders.
Nobody gives a damn about you and with the wrong choice of actions you'd very quickly be dead.

The thing I like most about the game is the realistic approach the game picks.  You are not limited in any way. You could help people and complete quests or kill everyone you meet. No "you can't attack him 'cus he's a good guy" bollocks. Your ally NPCs die and you want to resurrect them? Well, you can't. But you can kill them yourself or sell them as slaves.
The game gives you almost no limitations. Now that's really awesome.

Fallouts 1 and 2 are awesome. I have yet to play through either completely, but I too really love all the options. It's got some dark humor in there as well. A great experience.

Haven't tried the first 2. I hear all my friends talk about 3 so I got it but there are a lot of glitches and freezes and even more in Fallout New Vegas. So much so that I refuse to buy that one.

Nowadays you are either a graphics whore or a fanboy. BR is Shank not CV. It is ridiculous to think that it is better than CV. If it was CV then it would be what RE4 is to Resi, a series killer. Dumb it down and make it look pretty. Enough idiots will buy it.

Both fallout 3 and new Vegas have patches that fix the bugs. Once you get those it works fine. I've rarely had Problems with either

My bro has both fallout 3 and New Vegas. I've seen him play fallout 3 but I've never been comfortable playing such expansive games. It's like Fabel; there's a huge open world to explore at your leisure, do quests when you want and other things. For me, I get lost on them because there's no fixed directional play. I know a lot of you would argue otherwise but I'd prefer to play a traditional RPG. It's just that much more simple for me.

I kind of agree with this. I got burnt out on the Final Fantasy series (they've always been fun to play, but I'm just getting tired of them). I played Fallout 3 last year and I'm hooked. I bought New Vegas and the Fallout Trilogy, too, but I haven't had the chance to play any of those yet. I really can't wait to play the first 2 games, even moreso than New Vegas.

Also, on the Point Lookout DLC for Fallout 3, throwing a grenade at one of the hillbillies in VATS is one of the funniest things you can ever do in a game.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

I love Fallouts 1, 2 and Tactics. Fallouts 3 and New Vegas are dreadful games that are poorly programmed and have no soul. Honestly when I look at the first fallout games, I see a world that has a unique vibe with unique characters. Fallout 3 and NV took that away from me, now we get a bland wasteland that is so devoid of color. I mean not that I am expecting much from a post apocalypse, but seeing the same shades of gray, green, and brown hurts my eyes after a while. Oh and New Vegas was a MASSIVE letdown. From early trailers it looked awesome, with the whole vegas theme. Playing the game itself though, that was only a SMALL PORTION of the game. New Vegas was just one small colorful area in a big BROWN wasteland, similar to the Green/Grey wasteland of the original ONLY A DIFFERENT FUCKING COLOR. I won't get into it further, there is just so much I hate about those games. Fallout 1 and 2 though are amazing classic rpgs and they should really make another one like that.

I liked new vegas way more than I liked regular fallout 3. Both are really good tho. Even better if you like Oblivion

I have Fallout 3 GotY Edition for 360 and like it a lot. I haven't had any issues. Though It updated when I got it, so I'm sure the problems were fixed. GotY stands for Game of the Year, so it must be a pretty good game right? If you get it, I'd definitely recommend this version. Or you'd have to pay probably a hundred bucks to separately download the add-on stuff. I'm pretty sure IGN and a number other sites list it as one of the Best 360 games available. I've also read it has more problems on PS3, as well as Oblivion for that matter.... On PC as long as you have a nice computer I'm sure you'd be fine. Basically everything I've read says Fallout 3 is Better than New Vegas. I think I'll wait for Fallout 4 to buy another one of these. By the time that comes out it will probably look fancier than Skyrim will. I have been interested in Fallout 1 and 2, and Tactics, been thinking of buying the collection of them. I really don't play games on my PC much though. Besides Blizzard older Blizzard stuff like Star Craft and Warcraft III. As far as Final Fantasy goes... Loved them always, I have all the PSone releases. For PS2 I only bought XII. My favorite was Tactics by far in any case. I think I'm just not into JRPG's anymore now. After playing the newer Western RPG's on my 360, I just don't think I'm interested in playing a new JRPG. I still love the ones on my older systems.... So Fallout rocks, Mass Effect rocks even more, Dragon Age and Oblivion rock also. I think we've had enough Final Fantasy. I'd always wanted another Tactics, but I don't think that will ever come to a home console. Maybe Final Fantasy 15 will turn me back though? I've had no interest in any other newer JPRG's on 360/PS3 though... I think I liked them a lot more when the characters were 'super deformed'. To me all the Japanese characters look all the same and way too pretty, especially in Final Fantasy. Just seems lame...

F3 and FNV are awesome... keep going back to them and finding new stuff to hunt for and do. Love the sandbox approach, the atmospherics and the general feel of them. Have got the original Fallout games but haven't had time to look at them.

I don't really think it's appropriate to compare Fallout to Final Fantasy though. They both have different settings, one is fantasy and the other is post apocalyptic and the gameplay for the games are generally different.

I have to agree other then final fantasy adventure (eventually became mana series), battle system is totally different. But as far as recognizable rpgs these and Zelda, World of Warcraft, Oblivian seem to be the most known.

Fallout 3 was interesting for about an hour. And then I left the vault.

That was it, for me; nothing after that could even pretend to hold my interest. Everything about it just descends into this absess of mediocrity, this kind of meaningless meandering that plagues the overwhelming majority of western RPGs.

The complaints about "lack of color" when bandied about as objective criticism are amusingly dumb, though.
