The anime style in Rondo worked because it was in conjunction with the saturated palette in both sprites and backgrounds, despite their inherent GRIM THEMES, and the poppy rock tunes. It all blended perfectly with the straight up action-packed level design. It embellished on the existing personality set by the game. With Dawn and Portrait, the anime was really disconnected from the games who are more like bland husks than anything else. DXX was nice too. The artstyle matched the mood the game set up. Though I found the backgrounds technically great, I found their actual content really banal compared to Rondo. It's a nice style, it just wasn't executed well in bringing out the potential it had. It fits that game. If Rondo had DXX's art, I don't think it would fit as well. It's really a case-by-case scenario.
