Topic: Best version of Castlevania

Poll doesn't include things such as the original Famicom Disk version of Castlevania and the original Sharp X68000 version of Chronicles, as from what I know they're basically the same games as their corresponding entries in the poll.

I'm by no means an expert on this, but you guys have played a lot more games than I have.

My favorite of those is Super Castlevania IV, although the original NES Castlevania and the Sharp X86000/Chronicles version are both classics in their own right.  I consider Super Castlevania IV to have the best graphics, best gameplay and physics, and the best difficulty curve.  The game is rather long, but consistently enjoyable, and it's got a very well composed, atmospheric soundtrack to compilment the gothic visual presentation.

I think Castlevania 1 has the best boss line-up in the series, even though you can spam them with Holy Water if you're feeling kind of cheap

Super Castlevania IV.

This is the game that brought back all of the same feelings I got when I first played CV 1 back in '87.

There are so many things about SCV IV that make it great (music, atmosphere, gameplay, graphics), but the one that stands out is the fact that it did all of those things while being a FIRST generation SNES game!

Even today I still play it regularly....

call me crazy but i like the unhindered purity of the basics, vampire killer.  sure the difficulty level is rediculous and the hit detection wasn't all there, but man if you can make it through that game my hat goes off to ya.

Yeah memorizing where all those keys are is a bitch and really makes the game tough, not to mention no continues.

NES one is easy as pie as long as you know where everything is.

My vote right now goes to SCIV, though, just because of the soundtrack and epic length.

Much as I love Castlevania Chronicles, IV gets my vote. I just love the level variety, and how you have to go so far just to get to the castle in the first place. Then the castle itself is a whole new beast! Beautiful graphics and soundtrack too.

Why wouldn't you use holy water on Death, or any other boss for which it's particularly effective in the original NES Castlevania?  Don't you always try to use the best strategy for a given situation when you play videogames?
