I've read the original once when I was 12, then again when I was 15.
It's a deeply flawed book, but I love it dearly. It's sort of the outlier on my qualifying exam list; alongside Ulysses, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Mrs. Dalloway it seems "under-literary," but it really captures the anxiety of modernity and the weird hybrid space of the Anglo-Irish in the late British empire.
When you were 12? That reminds me of one time I was at a major bookstore chain and I saw Dracula in the kids' section, and I was just thinking, "What?" (Because decapitation is so appropriate for a kids' book.)
