Thinking about getting one. Wish we had long ago when Target had one for $40. Had I known then there were a lot of awesome side-scrollers and cool games I could import, I'd have wanted one for sure.

Looking for game recommendations. Stuff I know of I definitely wanna check out are:

NITM (a given)
Assault Suit Leynos 2
Clockwork Knight 1 & 2
Shinobi Legions (assuming it's as good as the Genesis games)
The House of the Dead (unless there's a better port? I've never played the first game)
Keio Yuugekitai (always wanted to play it since seeing it in an issue of GameFan)

and I know there are others that aren't coming to mind.

Tell me, tell me, tell me what to get. I'm mostly into side-scrolling platformers and run'n'gun games, though also like overhead action RPGs and the like. I'll look into any genre, though, if the game looks cool.

Also, is there a Saturn-specific S-Video cable, or can I use a standard cable (both ends the same)?

Ah yes, Sega Saturn. I remember when it first launched, the asking price was $400(!!!!)

Till this day I still wish they would've made a portable version, be it fan-custom or official. I'd be all over that!

As for games? I dunno if you're into Dragon Ball Z, but DBZ: Legends was a neat 2D-sprites-3D-backgrounds game, with a unique control scheme




I'm sure you've heard of NiGHTS: Into Dreams? I heard that was a good game, it even came with a special controller. I'm looking through an ancient GameFan magazine & I see a game called "Keio Geketai," it's described as a sidescrolling action-platformer. I tried digging up further info on it, but to no avail.

There was a survival horror game I played on it, it's called deep fear. Like resident evil, but underwater and with a few unique aspects such as an oxygen meter, under water walking, etc.
Give it a look, was a nifty game for its time.

I only recently got a Saturn but I can tell you a few things -
1. Don't expect the games to be cheap, the collector market for Saturn imports is alive and well. And with very deep pockets.
2. You will indeed need a proprietary S-video, RCA or coaxial cable.
3. Get an action replay plus to play import games, and to have a place to store your extra savegames. Also to get the 4M of extra memory which some titles require.
4. Replace the watch battery used to save games when you get your console.
5. Recommending Symphony of the Night is of course a given.

The Saturn had what I and many others consider to be the best fighting game ever made, Vampire Savior aka Darkstalkers 3. But since I already have the playstation version and money is tight I've been dragging my feet on getting it.

There's also Vampire Hunter/Darkstalkers 2, an excellent game in it's own right.

Powerslave is also great if you like exploration FPS.

PS- Avoid the playstation version of Powerslave, it's basically a different game made with the same elements and it suffers from a lot of slowdown.

I already knew assualt suit leynos 2 is one that you wanted to play. One place I recommend to you abnormal is classic game room on youtube they have some good reviews on saturn games. My recomendations are panzer dragoon not saga we all know that the price is freaking expensive. For rpgs there is grandia and a sega saturn version of suikoden

Get a Saturn and get the following games except Liquid Kids, it's a fantastic game but is a little too high for it's own good, I just got lucky to find it for under $100.

Gun Frontier (cheaper on Taito Legends 2, one of the 4 Arcade Gears titles, this one didn't see PS1 release though)
Pulirula (again an Arcade Gears title, kinda pricy these days, mine was under $50 at the time)
Capcom Generation 2 (all the Makaimura games aka GnG you can handle)
Capcom Generation 4 (Mercs, Commando, Gun Smoke) CG 1, 2, 3, and 4 did see a release on Capcom Classics Collection PS2, but there's filters that the Saturn version does not have, clearer graphics go to Saturn. Street Fighter II insert revision here rounds out CG 5)
Capcom Generation 1 - 1942, 1943, 1943 Kai, old school Capcom shmups
Gekirindan - better port on Taito Legends 2, Saturn version is still nice, but pricy, recently passed up a copy while on vacation
Wonder 3 (another of the Arcade Gears, it too is pricy, but can be found cheaper on the second PS2 Capcom compilation, though it too has filters applied, another I passed on recently)
Image Fight/X-Multiply - this one is another Arcade Gears game, if you find it for $50, snag the damned thing as it goes for far higher on ebay, the most expensive of the AG titles. Passed on it awhile back on vacation, have a second shot that this time I didn't miss on, $57. Both shmups from Irem, Xing did the ports.
Hyper Duel (this one will kill your wallet, avoid unless you like spending money, though the game is from Technosoft, try in MAME first to suit your taste. The game may even grow on you quickly.)
Battle Garegga, great Raizing shmup, but far too costly
Batsugun - Toaplan's last official game as a company, see Battle Garegga for price.
Kingdom Grandprix found this one for a mere $20, great Raizing shmup/racer, isn't always cheap though
Gunbird - Psyikyo shmup, kinda bullet hellish, not bad at all.
Sonic 3D Blast - kicks the shit out of the Genesis version, not as bad as people say.

I'll stop here for suggestions though, explore the rest of the library on your own.

edit: I believe Keio Geketai is the sequel to Keio Flying Squadron on the Sega CD. There is also a prequel to Beyond Oasis also on the Saturn, as well as the third Shining Force, but only 1 episode got released in the US, the final two are Japan only and untranslated.

PowerSlave is something I've had my eye on. Never knew till now how different the three versions are. Probably a game where, if I like it, I'd eventually grab all three versions.

Yeah I've heard the PC version of Powerslave is decent, but that like the playstation game it is a much more traditional, linear experience.

This is true, I got my Japanese version of Darkstalkers 2 for less than $10 and you can get a lot of Japanese dating sims etc. for around that much. But most of the games that you actually want/that are exclusive to the console or have their best versions there are usually around $30 and up, emphasis on up. Though I consider $30 pretty hefty for a game approaching 2 decades in age anyway. I paid about $60 for SotN which is twice what the Saturn itself costed, not counting the Action Replay Plus.
