Rondo's music vs. Dracula X's

I have odd tastes. For example, I actually prefer Dracula X's SNES instrumentation to that of Rondo's redbook originals. I have no idea if it's because I played Dracula X first or what. Vampire Killer in particular seems more powerful, and I think Den sounds far better in DXX as well.

Cemetery and Opus 13 both sound far better in Rondo, though.

What do you all think?

I wouldn't consider our taste "odd". There is no rule, that you must like ROB soundtrack over the CVDX one. It's just your personal preference - not better, not worse, than that of the others.

I too think, that CVDX music sounds more pronounced and powerful, than music from Rondo. The biggest examples of this are Bloody Tears, Den and Tales of the Ghost Ship, that was lame disco-thing in the ROB.

IMO:
One is good when you wanna listen to some quality redbook CV tunes.

the other when you wanna listen to some rondo music, but are more in the mood for some chiptuned music.

The version of Bloody Tears in Dracula X is my personal favorite. I like the version of Cemetery better there as well.  Quite an achievement on the SNES soundchip.

The SNES Dracula X had much better music and IMO this was due to the songs being able to loop without being interrupted by a silence gap. Bloody Tears in Rondo is probably the worst of all them. It has an annoying pause in specific sections of the tune that interferes with the flow of the song. The SNES Dracula X eliminated this issue and brought fourth an excellent tune. The songs that don't appear in Dracula X are my personal favorites in Rondo. But I do have to wonder how well they would have translated from actual synth to chiptune.

CORRECTION! It's not Bloody Tears, it's Vampire Killer that was the worst in Rondo, but awesome in SNES Dracula X. Sorry for the mixup  ;D

Really? I prefer Rondo's Bloody tears over X's. I feel Rondo's simply has much fuller sound. the SNES version just can't match the awesome organ sounds and wonderful percussion.

I can't think of a Rondo tune I liked better than Dracula X rendition. The starting level and the Ghost Ship level's remixes have always been the most prominent for me. I like some of the level usage of the tunes better in Dracula X, too. But then, I played Dracula X first, and outside of Rondo's sense of scope, I like just about everything in Dracula X better.

Everything sounds better in Rondo. All Dracula X does is take the crystal clear original compositions, full of nuance and depth, and inelegantly crams them through the SNES soundchip. There's no real effort to adapt the material properly, given the significantly different technology being utilized, so that it could shine in its own right. The end result is an underwhelming and thoroughly inferior soundscape, with weaker percussion and basslines, bad guitar samples, stunted melodic flow and a general stale and muddled tone. Rondo's all-encompassing "pop", whether it be invoked through a danceable sensibility, vastness, or sheer power, is wholly absent, and makes for unchanging, monotonous listening.

They even omitted the Stalker bass solo in Dracula X's rendition of Vampire Killer. Unacceptable.
