There really is no worse of a feeling than taking the unintended turn in one of those three-dimensional bonus stages from STH3/S&K.

About the topic... I love the original trilogy.
I played them a lot of times when I was younger, and I still enjoy them a lot.

But then there were the other games...
The two PSP games were mediocre at best, the NDS duology was good perhaps, but didn't achieve the "very good" rating, at least with me... they had several mistakes.

For Wii, I kinda liked Secret Rings, but didn't feel very Sonic to me, and Black Knight was overly short. Then, I liked Unleashed.

The PS2 and PS3 games were horrible (generally).

I loved the Episodes I and II of Sonic 4 for WiiWare, and also Generations, which I played on PC.

And the last Sonic I played was Colours, some months ago, and I really didn't like it. It felt like a step back from the various improvements of the previous titles (but still it was better than those games I labeled as horrible).

And now, as always, I'm expecting the next retro game... which would be Sonic 4: Episode III, or Sonic 5.
Now I'm tired, eternally walking... forever dying, and never stopping. I feel in sorrow, all I see is white. I’m following a blind way beneath a sad sky.

Speaking of PC Generations, I heard that there are some consistently crash causing spots, are there any patches that can fix those?
It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.

Then Lords of Shadow 2 just takes a big, semi-solid, smelly, pea-green dump all over everything.

Still playing Sonic Mods, Sonic Megamix is by far the best mod, Six characters and original stages.

I hate sonic 4 Episodes 1+2, they play too slow and the music makes my ears barf

Colors (wii and Ds) were good, I like the variety with the stages, it felt you playing a full game.

Generations was... okay, after Colors my expectations were high, the Scoring was too forgiving, the game was too short, and the power-ups were not really work it, the 3ds version... just youtube it, it's too short to even put money in it.

I hope the Wii-U Sonic Game will be more like Colors, colors didn't have the full on rails action like generations (press Boost to win and occasionally jump)

I hooked up my game gear with my Genesis AC adaptor the other day (they were designed to be compatible, something I would have liked to have known years ago lol) and Sonic 2 still worked, and I still can't get far at all in that game lol. Sadly the screen has faded and the sound doesn't work anymore. Two very common complaints with the system as I understand. What a blast from the past though.
