Current thoughts on CV Judgment?

I'm playing Castlevania Judgment right now. Back in '08 my reaction towards the game was pretty much the same as every person everywhere. It was pretty baffling after the success of OoE, and I wasn't surprised at the largely awful reception it got from fans and critics.

Now that I'm playing it four years later, I actually like it. It's a very guilty pleasure, certainly, and the game is very average. It's not good, but it's not an awful turd either. I find the story mode to be fairly interesting for most of the characters. Maria's was extremely painful though. Sypha's wasn't so great either.

Too bad the designs are mostly bad. I kept visualizing what the game would look like if they used designs from the previous games. I doubt it would have sold much better, but it may have gotten a kinder response from fans. Regardless, Cornell's look is great and Simon's design has strongly grown on me.

What do you all think of it nowadays?

I'm waiting for that hack.  I'm OK with some of the designs (I love Carmilla's and Golem's).
Back when the game came out I actually would play it online quite often.  These days?  Not so much.

When i first played it, i thought it was ok. I have played plenty worse fighting games. I went through the game with all the characters, for completion's sake. I wonder why there weren't any hidden characters, such as Maxim or Henry? I don't like that they included "Golem," what a waste of a character slot. I hear you can give Aeon a top hat & alter his outfit so he resembles St. Germain. Why not just include St. Germain then? I don't like how there's 2 characters named "Aeon" in the CV universe, the other being a fat chef, sheesh

The Maria-boobs subplot is typical Japanese innuendo so I wasn't surprised; although Castlevania isn't immune to boobage (SotN Succubus, among several other examples), the game could've done without it. It was an attempt at injecting humor but just came off as extremely awkward (even by my standards), and Castlevania [the brand] is better than that.

I thought it was funny how they recycled enemies straight from Curse of Darkness for the "in-between" stages, such as the Minotaur. That was extremely lazy. Even Death's model was recycled for Time Reaper. wtf konami?

Nowadays, while i still have my wii semi-connected, if i choose to turn it on & play Judgment, i will automatically see ReBirth on the screen & just play that instead. so it's extremely tough decision to have both Judgment & ReBirth on the same system, to play Judgment over ReBirth

p.s. I gotta feeling had they decided to make Akumajo Dracula PS3/360, they would've just based Alucard's model off of his Judgment one. But with a cape.

Judgment's a pretty fun brawler, and I felt it was worth the $18 I bought it for.

Would love to have someone to play it with, though.

I had fun with it. I remember being happy with most of the stages, and sleepwalking through most of it with Cornell (up until the Time Reaper), but it was fun. Tried playing as each character, but the only person I played all the way through with was Cornell. I always wanted to come back to it to see more endings and unlock more stuff, but I honestly don't think I'll ever get around to it. A nice distraction for the time, but I'd rather play something more traditional (as far as the franchise goes) instead.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

Ill bet if it wasnt for the art style, (and BOOBIESBOOBIESBOOBIES) it would not have been so badly received.

That said, some designs were pretty neat. Alucard despite looking somewhat generic, still manages to look interesting enough, Carmilla goes without saying, Golem was neat, but there are so many different interpretations of Golems that this one isnt anything too special as far as design, and Trevor Beltmont is a guilty pleasure design. He has a rather strong jaw design, and I kind of like the eyepatch. (and his theme is really neat. Though i doubt anyone really thinks ill of the soundtrack) Eric Lecarde was alright- bit too radically different, (and young, and I didnt like the spear,) but alright. And i actually like Dracula's design.
Laura and Gabriel arrive in the deepest cave of the castle and... they find IGA.

I like how the camera is positioned behind the character and how big the character is. I think a 3D Castlevania should be like that rather than the far away forced cameras. The backgrounds are also very Castlevania-ish compared to a lot of the LoS stuff. The character designs are a mixed bag, and the while some of the story ideas are neat, there's a lot of cornball stuff, too. Nice music. The game itself is fun, but flawed. I'd like to have seen a MotionPlus-equipped version of the game.

I still think the character designs are garbage for a CV game, and it's inexcusable not to have included the original designs. Also, I still think the basic engine is wasted on a fighting game. They should have made an actual cv game out of it. And finally, the Maria boob story is atrocious.

Never played judgement. Have no desire to either. But if this hack that Jorge mentions is as good as it sounds then I'll want to see some screens and dialog. The changes I'd like to see are; No mummy Grant. No leather & lace, Simon and Trevor. A cutback on the whole boob story thing as that's not CV. And no Sypha, Trevor, Grant love triangle bull either as that's got nothing to do with the CV III story and did not happen. And finally all original outfits, both original and alternate ones from past games.

I never hated Judgment. Yeah, it's not great, but it's not bad either. The most fun I had was taking this and a bunch of other random fighting games to my friend's house. There was a group of 4 or 5 of us, so we'd switch out every now and then. We actually had a lot of fun playing Judgment despite some of it's broken characters and terrible designs. The story of Judgment wasn't great, but I didn't really play it for the story (weird coming from someone who normally plays games for the story!), I played it because it was Castlevania and a fighting game. I overall really liked Aeon. His design was pretty good too, actually. I would have liked to have seen more done with him. Then again, I also think more should have been done with Saint Germain, but that's a different game.  :P

I don't like how the characters move and feel. I would've preferred this game had it been a traditional fighter where characters are facing each other at all times. I doubt it would've been especially great even then, but at least not... all over the place.

I didn't spend enough time with this game to really comment on the quality. All I know is that it wasn't much fun for me. Maybe it gets better. I shall never know.
