So far as I know in SOTN Maria is only playble in the PSP version included with the Castlevania X Chronicles, and the Japan-exclusive Sega Saturn versions of the game.

Can you contact these people you've heard it from and validate it's source? I'd be very interested in trying this trick out.

Castlevania X Chronicles has Maria as playable, but she is different from her sega saturn version. She is much weaker and with the new dialogs\voice overs, nothing else new is there. No sega saturn content.

As for Maria being playable on SotN, i don't believe that it is possible, since people who have hacked the game's sprites, they have stated that her sprite movement sheet is incomplete.

That is an unfinished ending, since the game came out rushed out, like the rest of them. Thanks Konami for ruining Castlevania games.

Yep. Anyone wanting to play as Maria would do best to obtain a copy of either of those versions, if you've already got a PSP that's definitely the cheaper option. My copy of SOTN on the Saturn cost me more than the Saturn itself! Not to mention the price of the action replay plus region unlocking memory card.

I've got my Saturn SotN copy new for 40$.

Sweet deal. Mine costed more than that and the manual was a little crinkly, but the disc appears never used. The best Castlevania specific deal I've gotten was all of the GBA games mint in the boxes in bubble wrap (they look like they were just taken out of shrinkwrap) for about $13 apiece. Or it might be when I got boxed copies of both N64 games for $30, then the manual for Legacy for $4 and the guide for like $15. Not bad at all when I consider I've seen a complete copy of LoD with the guide sell for over $100.

Is this like how there's a way to save Aerith in FFVII or have Sephiroth join your party?

I've got Castlevania 64 factory sealed for 8$ and Castlevania classics for GBA factory sealed for 6$.

Schweet. Only other really notable deal on Castlevania I've got was Rondo of Blood for about half the asking price.

Eh I'd say it's more a case of some kids hearing about playable Maria back in the day and/or seeing screenshots from the Saturn version, then it just morphed from there the way rumors do. I think it's hard for people today (especially people who either weren't born or were adults at the time) to grasp how nebulous and uncertain information was back in the day, especially for kids and their interests.

Oh yeah? Well I had the opportunity to acquire a factory sealed SotN Tiger handheld, as well as a factory sealed Simon's Quest Tiger Wristwatch, for $24.99 each. Here are a couple of photographs for confirmation:
