A couple nights ago I finished the sequel to Rosenkreuzstilette, Rosenkreuzstilette Fraudenstachel.
If anyone is familiar with the first one, they should know by now how great it is.
To those who aren't, it is a game with Megaman gameplay, Castlevania look, great gothic soundtrack and lots of anime girls.
Well, the second game is kind of more of the same, but with some differences. There are things I consider improvements and things I consider a step back, but everything from a personal PoV.
The difficulty is considerably toned down. Some might not like this, but the first one was really, really tough. In addition, now the main character have autofire, but the main weapon (equivalent to the Megaman games' MegaBuster) now decreases as you shoot, so you have to fill it just like any other "robot" ("girl", in this case) weapons.
I liked this difficulty better than the first game's one.
The backgrounds are some of the best I've seen in a 2D game, even at almost the same level of the best Castlevania. They are really gothic and beautiful, and the level of detail is awesome.
The levels are also very nice and creative, but everything within the normal gameplay of RS, not overly creative, and that's a good thing (otherwise, you will find yourself doing some random stuff, like I've seen on other games).
The main character from the first game, Spiritia Rosenberg (who looks a lot like Fumino from Mayoi Neko Overrun), and his fairy, Lily, are mainly absent from this game. I didn't like that. Freudia isn't pretty and charismatic as Spiritia, although his fairy was equally cute with Lily.
The rest of the characters are pretty much of the same range of the previous game (same stereotypes, some returning).
I couldn't follow the story. With my little knowledge of japanese and a dictionary, I could follow part of the first game's story, but this one used too many difficult kanjis. I only catched some things here and there, but didn't understand most of it. This is not a critic, but I can't compare the stories of both games.
And the most important point (to me): the music. I think the first game was far superior, I remember copying 13 themes to my selection folder on my computer. From this one, there were some themes that were OK, but not as great as the first game's ones. But it redeemed in the last 2 boss fights of the game.
The final boss track is my favourite from both games.
Also, I didn't like the fact of having to pay to get this one, when the first one was free.
I'd give 8,5 to the first game and 8 to this one, so the first one is better, but they are both great in my opinion.
And that's it. If anyone played this game, I'd like to read your opinions and comparisons between the 2 games.
