Although I doubt From Software will be the next developer for a 3D Castlevania although I can dream. However I do think the aesthetics and ideas of the Souls games could contribute to a successful re imagining of Castlevania in vein of the first Castlevania.  A horrifying journey through numerous lands and castles before reaching Castlevania. The story only being relegated with dialogues with various NPCS ( possibly vampire hunter and town people)  or journals that you find ( one of the successful narrative devices in Lord of Shadows). Also Dracula would remain in shadows with you only hearing rumors of him. The combat could be borrowed from Lord of Shadows with modification making the whip really de powered with the need for sub weapons and traps and pits making one be careful of his surrounding and plan accordingly. I could see such a game being much more popular among the mainstream than Lord of Shadows.

So you want a CV2 remake in 3D? Cool :P

The horror and atmosphere of CV2 and metroidvania of SOTN/ the Castlevania games on 64 and challenge of CV1 with graphics of Lord of Shadow and some of its combat mechanics :D rolled into one awesome package. And thank you happy to be here.

The "souls" games are the closest thing to a 3D version of a metroidvania I have ever played.

If they made a Castlevania game that played like Demon's Souls (but added jumping) I could die a happy man.

I have no idea how outsourcing really works, but I was thinking that maybe From Software is a little too big to be doing someone else's game? Again, I have no idea how things like this work, but normally you'd see the likes of Konami and Capcom outsourcing to rather small and sometimes completely unknown studios.

Well, SquareEnix did "outsource" Dragon Quest to Level5, but that was before Level5 became as big as they are today (with the Layton series and whatnot).

As much as I'd like From Soft to make a Castlevania game, I think they'd be better off - financially - making another Souls game. Not to badmouth Castlevania, but my guess is that Dark Souls 2 will outsell Lords of Shadow 2 quite a bit... Even though LoS2 arguably looks like the more "mainstream" game of the two. I guess time will tell, but those are my two cents...

HOWEVER, with the right kind of marketing, i think From Soft would be a great way to really make Castlevania hip, or something. But that would have to happen right NOW when From Soft is still hot and happening... not in 3 or 4 years.

It would need to have more emphasys on platforming (and real platforming, not the shit we see in modern games), as Dark Souls has a lot more emphasys on exploration.

Hudson did a plenty of Mario Party games so I think its totally possible :)

I definitely agree which is why I think if the next developer is not From Software they should look at Dark Souls games as inspiration where to take the next Castevania games into 3D. If you look at games such as God of War and Batman Arkham Asylum they aren't original or inventive games but borrowed from a lot of other games in order to become successful in their inception. It was the sequels in which they could branch out and become inventive. I do really believe that DNA for a great Castlevania games lies in the soul games. Maedros is right in suggesting that they add platforming which is through making the Belmont or the main character being it more spry then the average Dark Soul character in order to make it more of Castlevania game.

Also its no contest, Dark Souls will totally sell Lord of Shadows 2 due to its established fan base and the fact that as much as I love what Mercury Steam did on Lord of Shadows, From Software is out of their league.

While I do think it would be pretty cool if Software made the next CV, I do agree with the people here and I don't see it happening. Although if for some random reason they did I welcome the challenge and I bet the lore would be really fun too.

I'd rather have FromSoftware continue the Demons / Dark Souls series, because they are excellent and I want them to continue, and give Castlevania to anyone capable of deliver a true CV experience, with its soundtrack and everything (not saying that FS can't do that, but they already have their great franchise).
Now I'm tired, eternally walking... forever dying, and never stopping. I feel in sorrow, all I see is white. I’m following a blind way beneath a sad sky.

Just because the industry uses the term, doesn't mean it's good to express shit. 2.5D was always a shitty term to describe these type of games.

WTF are you talking about?  No word or term expresses anything at all except for the meaning we give them. The fact that the term 2.5D has been used widely in the industry and colloquially in reference to games that combine 2D and 3D characteristics is exactly what gives it meaning. Given this decades old definition, I don't see how you can call it a "shitty" term. How does it fail to express a combination of 2D game play and 3D graphics or vice versa? Especially when referencing MoF which has nothing but 2D game play with 3D graphics. In fact the only thing in MoF that isn't 2D game play is the QTEs which if anything are 1D.

Just for the record: I don't quite think "2.5D" is an industry term. I've never heard it used, nor do I use it myself in any official capacity. We discuss aesthetics and gameplay differently. ie "2D gameplay" and "3D graphics".

I say industry in it's broadest sense including game magazines, advertisements and blurbs. While I'm sure it's not in any handbooks I think you'll be hard pressed to find gamers or developers that don't recognize it and understand more or less what it means.

What the hell was the topic again? Oh, right...
The next game. I honestly couldn't say who the next developer should be, but I'd prefer the game be closer to the old canon. I don't want a story about Dracula, I want a story about the Belmonts featuring Dracula. The fun of most Castlevania game play is the synergy of the short range main attacks, the interesting sub-weapons, and the platforming. Whether it's an action game or and adventure game those are the things I'd focus on.

We recognise it and understand what it means, but for developers we have other, longer standing, terms. We also usually talk about games in a different, more specific, way.

I may be mistaken here, but I think I the first time I read the term 2.5D was way back when the original Klonoa was released. I always thought it was rather fitting? Then again, "3D sidescroller" might technically be a better description.

Most people like to use short words and to shorten words because its more easy this way (lazyness around the world), like BRB, AFK, IIRC, etc. So I can see "2.5D" being very common.
