So Classic Game Room reviewed Circle of the Moon

Considering CGR is one of the oldest retrogame review series on the web, originally running back when the Dreamcast was new, then relaunching after a long hiatus about 4 or 5 years ago. It's odd how few Castlevania games they've covered, I can only recall 3 at the moment, including this one.

Classic Game Room - CASTLEVANIA: CIRCLE OF THE MOON review

It's a bit annoying that he chose to use so much camcorder-on-screen footage for this review, seems to be something he's doing a lot lately. To add in more off the cuff gameplay comments or just because it's easier I guess. The review itself has the usual CGR irreverence but is very positive.

I agree, Castlevania Circle of the Moon is amazing game with but for me there are 1-2 very bad things.
The worst thing about this Castlevania is that there is no bestiary therefore you do not have the knowledge about the monsters you are fighting. You cannot see if the monster you are killing over and over has an item to drop. There is not even a single line to support the monsters in this game.

From all 3 GBA Castlevania games only Aria of Sorrow has the best of everything.

CotM - No bestiary, no drop chance therefore you have to llok into sites about those things.

Harmony of Dissonance - Has bestiary and drop information but no explanation about the monsters! (WHY?!?!? It has the space for 1-2 lines!!!!! WHY?!?!?!) Also NO NEW GAME+ WTF??? This is the killer for me. I collect all 100% of the items and for what? To NOT be able to replay it with them?

Aria of Sorrow- Got everything right. New game+ just not with the core game advancing souls and abilities. Beautiful bestiary with drops and cool info.

I just with someone make a hack of HoD and CotM just adding those stuff in.

PS: The soundtrack is a killer!!! (Awake + Aquarius = WIN!)

While i agree that it would have been more awesome if it was having a bestiary entry, i'd like to iform you that every enemy in CoTM, has 2 item drops, so all you have to do, is to kill them until you've got both of their drops.

You think that's bad? The lack of a shop was what eventually became a dealbreaker for me. How the heck am I supposed to pawn off all these obsolete and unused armor for healing items?
It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.

Then Lords of Shadow 2 just takes a big, semi-solid, smelly, pea-green dump all over everything.

Actually no shop was good for CotM because it added to the difficulty of the game. CotM is the only RPG Castlevania for me that you can't rely on Health Potions.

You could have a shop, that it doesn't sell potions or that it would required armors/items to trade for them.

That would actually make for an interesting fan project.

Stay tuned...

Tell that to the coliseum area. If you're not strong enough in levels or Gear then you are in for a rough ride. Even with a lot of health potions it's still a challenge just to make it out of there alive.

This game has always been one if my top 3. Difficulty plays a part in that like others have said where's the shop? Lol bestiary would be fitting as well and I wish there was one for all those cool enemies that seemed to be only used in this game. Nate Dogg is just that one hero we will unfortunately never know much about sadly  :-\

Circle of the Moon may lack some polish but it's undeniably one of the fan favorites. It is apologetically rough and won't hold your hand. This makes the exploration more rewarding. My only complaint may be the need to double tap run all the time, while clearly the later game is designed for you to be running always.

Otherwise this is an excellent game. It doesn't fear being a little different for it's time, but it clearly knows it's bounds and doesn't over step them.

Lol, that guy's voice.  ;D

I always liked the idea behind Circle better than the actual game. I thought the level design kinda sucked but that was a long time ago. I've beaten it but maybe I need to go back and revisit it.

I liked how - to me anyways - it had a bit of a SCIV feel to it. Good boss fights too.

I could never beat the arena. Someday I'll try again.
