The PSP version (Ultimate GnG, right? Maybe there's another one I don't know) isn't that difficult.
But the original arcade game is a hell of difficulty. Another game I could NEVER beat. With a lot of continues I made it to the last level.
And the NES port is hard because it's one of the worst ports I've seen.
Now I'm tired, eternally walking... forever dying, and never stopping. I feel in sorrow, all I see is white. I’m following a blind way beneath a sad sky.

Battletoads. I remember years ago, someone wrote on the Wikipedia page something like, If you can pass the Turbo Tunnel, grab yourself a beer and call it a day, because the rest of this shit is impossible.

Couldn't have said it better.

I remember Cobra Triangle getting pretty hard once you got to the moving ramps and waterfalls.

Bayou Billy was ridiculous, but only because the US version of the game was really screwed up. I actually kind of enjoyed the Japanese version.

Battetoads for game boy........if you managed to pass the swamp rally stage, then there is that stage where a huge saw is chasing you in a crazy labyrinth, not to mention the stage where you are climbing giant snakes e.t.c. Well, i have finished it and when i have done it, i felt like a champion...lol.

Another game I forgot to mention is Codename: Viper. Addicting as hell but also difficult in it's own right. You have very little in the way of hit points and usually you die in one or two hits (depending on what kills you). You can get life upgrades which will allow you to take more punishment however you still need to be very, very careful. I managed to beat this game several times but it is a real challenge.

What I don't understand about NG is why the game makes you go back to stage 6-1 when you lose a life in the final boss.
What I did when that happened, is simply close the emulator and never go back to the game.

What I did when that happened, is simply stay up till late in the morning  and tried over and over again till I beat it on my retro-bit/nes and go back to it.

I got them within a close time so I can't remember which one I beat NG first on but I do recall beating NG at my friends on my retro-bit a couple days afterward. At first he doubted me that I could beat it he was like bullshit so I showed him the ending screen after he said that   :P

At one point I  did consider contra on the nes hard but not anymore. I did beat it without the code yet my friend on the other hand ehh. His specialties are fps while mines are the old stuff. I got hit on the last boss right when I was about to beat him.  I had one life left and till that point he used all of my men up (mind you we did use the code) so he dealt the final blow by taking my final life  >:(  I remember this because I told him to stop but no..... freaking ass  >:(

Edit: That was such a horrible sentence why did I say it twice? Freaking Lelygax  :P   ;)

The saving grace on Ninja Gaiden is, although it sends you back after losing to one of the 3 final boss forms, you never have to re-battle any of them that you kill. So you can essentially go into the boss room, spam that diagonal fire attack, die on the next form, make your way back to the boss room, rinse and repeat. There's no friggin' way I'd ever have been able to beat Ninja Gaiden if the game made you kill all 3 boss forms in a row.

Hey I was thinking and what everyone thinks about a new Castlevania with a Battletoads or SGnG difficulty? (inb4 I said new, so no Haunted Castle or something like that lol)

I've beaten Ninja Gaiden 3, I've played it when I was a kid and could beat some stages, also we discovered all passwords of the game, I never expected that the "plane level" was the last one. I remember beating the first boss using my kamikaze technique (attacking him ignoring damage received) a lot of times. I've beaten it 7 years ago I think.

At one point I considered contra one the nes hard not really anymore I did beat it without the code my friend on the other hand, his specialties are fps mines are the old stuff he was such a cheat in contra he took all my extra men mind you we did use the code. What a dick, tell me more about your harem and how your friend stolen all your extra men. Since they were extra ones you still have some right? xD

You're playing the Japanese version.  The US version was supposedly made much harder (I've never played the Japanese one, so I can't compare).  The US one has no password system, more scarce powerups, and only five continues.  I've only made it to the sixth level of the US version.  I've beaten the first two NES Ninja Gaidens, so I think the third is considerably tougher.

I haven't played some of the games already mentioned, but out of the games I've played these are what I consider the hardest:

Haunted Castle
Contra (NES)
Gauntlet (NES)
Ghosts n' Goblins (NES)
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (PS2)

Doremi Fantasy, the first game Milon's Secret Castle is pretty tough (I like this one so screw AVGN), but this sequel is much better in terms of level design. But the thing is the game starts you off nice and slowly, but by the volcano world the game really ramps up the difficulty challenge to the point of near frustration. You do get infinite continues, but that's likely due to how hard the game gets in the last levels, and in some levels far sooner.

You mean like CotM, Rebith in hard classic mode and Lecarde Chronicles?
As much as I love those 3 games, I'd rather have a little less difficulty. It comes a moment when it gets overwhelming.

I'd almost say it's every bit as shitty as the Nerd said it is. :p But it is a pretty cool game regardless.

It's just so cryptic and hard to play. I played it over and over as a kid, never beating it till I saw coverage in a How to Win at Nintendo book. Took me through how to get through the later stages, and when you finally reach the end, I think it just has a black screen that says Game Over. I felt seriously gypped.

It is fun in its own bizarre way. I'd like to take a serious crack at it again sometime without any walkthroughs.

Do-Re-Mi Fantasy is a far superior game, that's for sure.
Oh yeah, and also:

Well, they could add a easy mode.
