Clone consoles are tricky, I can't really see Nintendo doing one because it would be expensive to do properly, plus it would be in competition with their virtual console. The reason most clone consoles can afford to be so cheap is that they use emulation rather than actually duplicating the hardware of the original console. This leads to imperfect playback and/or downright incompatibility with some game cartridges.
Castlevania 3 was well known for not playing on most clone consoles for example, though I think most newer ones have probably fixed this since "Does it play Castlevania 3?" was becoming one of the litmus test questions on the accuracy of a clone's emulation.
I would look more for Nintendo to do something like the
Atari Flashback though personally. That way Nintendo could make sure all the games they chose to put on it would work well, and that their virtual console wouldn't see increased competition from old cartridge copies of other games. I'd also expect it to be a lot more expensive than the Atari Flashbacks since well, Nintendo doesn't want to "devalue their IPs".
But hey, such things have happened. SEGA has licensed at least 2 clone Genesis/Mega Drive consoles that I know of (one of them being portable) but the consensus was that they were both pretty shite. Especially the sound emulation on the console one. Though that did have some built in games which was nice.
Also yeah it's sweet when new games get released for classic consoles. I still want to try out this bad boy.
Classic Game Room - PIER SOLAR and the GREAT ARCHITECTS review for Sega GenesisBuuuuuuut I've only bought 4 or so games in my entire life for $50 or more. They should just slap it on steam for $10 already. (And I'll grab it on a sale then.)
PS- I can't see a return of cartridges because they're so much more expensive to produce than discs. Though if they can figure out how to put bigger games on USBs (I don't know if it's a heating problem or what that's kept them from doing this already) I wouldn't be surprised if we see those becoming a distrubution method for games. Whatever point in the future that games get big enough that the number of installation discs you have to stick a game on becomes too absurd.
