CV and PS3 Recommendations

So, a friend of mine upgraded to a PS4, and just last week gave me his old PS3! :-D

I've already downloaded and tried the demo for Harmony of Despair...
...it seems...okay at first.  I was limited to Alucard, and what I assume is the first level, and never found very good power-ups.  Movement seems sooo slow!!! but I don't think that alone kills the game.  While I realize that a great difference in CV taste exists here, is it worth (I think) $15 bucks?  Is it worth it if I most often (and most likely) will only play solo?

I think I also saw a few "retro" CV games available, though I forget what they were now other than SotN.  I think I'll probably get these...though I already own SotN, so unless it includes the extra stuff from...was it the Saturn version?...I doubt I'd buy that.

And finally, any other games you'd highly recommend I check out?  I've never cared for sports/racing games, and usually prefer action/adventure/platforming games.

I really can't recommend Harmony of Despair if you intent of single player only.... unless you play around with modded saves since it's mostly a grind fest...

SoTN is the PSX version.

If you dig Castlevania and want a real challenge, Rouge Legacy will fit your fancy.

I'm still biding my time on the PS3 (conflicted about whether I should buy a used one or wait for the price to go down more on new ones) but you should definitely get the Sly Collection if you've never played any of the Sly Cooper games before. They're so fun, and the HD collection has the entire original PS2 trilogy remastered on it. 90% of the reason I'm getting a PS3 is to play Sly 4, the other 10% is to finally have a blu-ray player :p

I can't recommend Harmony of Despair, especially not for solo play. I might enjoy it if I had gotten it on PSN and could actually play online with people, but the little I did online with my Xbox Live Gold trial, I didn't really enjoy myself a whole lot.

SOTN, Chronicles, and Lament of Innocence are all on PSN.

Try out Dante's Inferno for a 3D Castlevania-ish experience.

If you're planning to play through Harmony of Despair with a few like-minded buddies, then the fun you'll have is worth every cent of it. But if you're going to spend most of your time playing alone, then don't bother -- levels were designed for co-op play, and multiplayer is what makes Despair worth playing in the first place. Otherwise, it'll just feel like a poor, stripped-down Metroidvania copy job.

I may stray from HoDespair then...I've only got one friend with a PS3 (if he still has it), and he also has 5 kids, and I'm not sure CV is quite his thing anyway.

And the store has CV Chronicles, and CV Dracula X Chronicles.  Both look like they're worth getting.

I'm definitely gonna check out Sly Cooper.  I have the first two...never did actually finish the second (I should do that) but I loved them!

And Dante's Inferno, Dragon's Crown, and Rogue Legacy all look really interesting.  I'll probably give them a shot too...though I've gotta get some more cash first!

Rogue Legacy reminds me of Gauntlet...and I think I remember a new one of those coming out soon. :-)

Rugal and Jorge are right on the money. Also get Dark Souls too, which is the successor of Demon Souls' fate. I initially dismissed Dante's Inferno when it was first released, but I tried it and it's actually pretty fun. Far more than what I expected.

When I picked up LoS from gamestop, the associate mentioned something coming out sometime down the road that he said was similar to Eternal Darkness.  I liked that game, so I think I wouldn't mind trying this one, but I completely forget what it was...anyone maybe know something that fits the bill?
I'm sure I could just go back sometime and next time he's there I could ask...but I thought I'd see if anyone here knew first.

Sounds like "Shadow of the Eternals"...
...which is an actual sequel to the old Eternal Darkness of Gamecube fame.
However, I thought that game was stuck in Development Hell, so maybe he meant something else?  I've not been keeping up with upcoming games, to be honest...

Likely Shadow of the Eternals, yeah. No idea what's going on with it since the two Kickstarter campaigns flopped, but the devs are apparently still working on it while scaling it back, but I'm not getting my hopes up for anything ever being released.

They may be two old games, but The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection is boss. Really sharp visuals make these games even more lovely to look at than on PS2.

Heavy Rain and Siren: Blood Curse are other cool exclusives, and Ni no Kuni is said to be good.

Shadow of the Eternals was put on an 'indefinite hiatus', but its dev apparently disbanded, so the project's essentially dead.

It's a shame, but as far as I'm concerned the game never looked that interesting in the first place. I'd loved the Gamecube classic, though; I wouldn't mind seeing something like it be released in the future.

I was able to pick up a disc copy of "Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection" for $20.
I have defeated five of 'em, I think.

However, right now Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3) has me hooked.  Classic jRPG action withe beautiful Ghibli visuals. :D
