Why are they shitting on this game so bad? Made me a lil upset. Yes it's tough; imo its the toughest out of the bunch.

Even though difficult and very unforgiving, I'd sooner play Haunted Castle then any of the LoS games. I enjoyed HC personally. It had great music, interesting backgrounds and effects normally associated with arcade games of that time, and the fact that we got to see the woman whom Simon married which was never shown in any other Simon-starring adventure.

After reading the article, I have to admit that I haven´t make myself a question that I don´t do it a few years ago: why Simon wears his "barbarian" outfit after his wedding? Clearly he is wearing a modern suit in the first scene. Then I respond to myself: c´mon, this is Castlevania! I can´t imagine Simon in a white suit fighting evil creatures...

As for the game itself, I would like that Konami improves the game in gameplay and options (one life and three continues ...), and gives a new and fresh treatment ala Adventure Rebirth. The music is great and the graphics too. I really love a remake (no reboot) of that game, to be sure ...

I agree with everything in that article.  Haunted Castle is a game that can really only be liked by hardcore Castlevania fans, and maybe retro arcade masochists.  I liked it more when I was younger, but I tried playing Haunted Castle again recently.  (They have one at the Galloping Ghost arcade in Chicago, right next to Vs. Castlevania!)  I hated the experience.  It was so brutally difficult, I just couldn't get any enjoyment out of it.  When 75% of your lifebar is drained by one hit by a bat, one of the most minor enemies in the game, you know the game has serious problems with difficulty balance.

Take a 26-year-old game, give it a bit of window dressing, pretend it's been released yesterday, come up with a title that makes it sound like Watergate, and you've got your new Nintendo Life feature.
Sure, Haunted Castle was tough, and had all of the makings of an arcade cash-in. But there's absolutely no reason to bring it all up now. It's hardly surprising that Konami has "kept silent" about it: it's more than two decades old.

And I'd certainly argue about Castlevania "never having been in better heath".

Yea i didnt agree with that part either. I think the glory days have yet to be surpassed upon its release. Gotta also factor in fandom/vs sales and how much games costed then and how much they are now

How well did the cabinet control? I've never seen the game played on an actual machine.

More of the former than the latter. It was also the very first username I'd used for gaming purposes; I've kept it ever since.

To this day I've yet to see an arcade cabinet actually use a D-pad (minus the ones using consoles built-in to them along with their own controllers). The Haunted Castle cabinet would be using the standard joystick and for me, when it comes to playing games like CV with a joystick it can get frustrating    Although I admit that I got good at playing CV II using a joystick, but ya know...that was CV II; A very forgiving game in terms of challenge.

Why? Unless the stick was damaged, it should play just as good if not better. That is unless you're not good with arcade controls.

When it comes to platforming games like CV (or Contra for that matter) using the arcade joystick rather then a console D-pad will really screw me over. It just doesn't feel natural, but that's just me.

I like HC. I can freely admit it's not the best CV game ever, but it's got cool, if not dated visuals and there's something I like about the graphics that I can't explain.
