Been playing a lot of this game for the last week. And while it's getting a little silly in cheapness here and there now that I'm about 70% done, it's still an excellent tribute to old school games a fun Metroidvania to boot. I'm playing it with my USB connected NES controller for that extra feel.

It's got many refrences to Castlevania along with other games (it's even got the electric seaweed from TMNT NES at one point!) but I don't want to spoil all of them. You can see the most obvious one in the trailer though, with the medusa heads. Which really only show up in that one spot as far as I've seen.

It's $5 on steam, probably desura to. Anyone else tried it yet?

Looks pretty cool. I think I'll add it to my wish list.

Sounds interesting.

It is very challenging and a lot of fun, I recommend keeping an eye out for it next time there's a steam sale or in case it shows up in a bundle.

Yeah gameplay-wise I would probably classify it as a mix of Mega Man meets SOTN with a dash of the original Castlevania thrown in. Like you said the music is good. And like the graphics the music gives me the distinct impression that the persons who made this game really know and love 8/16/32bit games and are inspired by them. Rather than just that they used pixel art because it was trendy or easier as is the case with a depressingly large number of indie games.

Looks pretty cool. I think I'll add it to my wish list.

Don't think you'll regret it, I just beat it with the "bad" ending/didn't collect all the doodads to face the true final boss and it's cool. I'll just say that ending had a direct reference to Castlevania as well! Think I'll go look at a guide to see what I need to do to get the real ending/face the real final boss.
