I remember long ago (it might have been late 2013) before LOS2 came out, Bergaron had a conversation with someone from Mercurysteam (or had ties with them) that their project after LOS2 would be a sci fi themed game with RPG elements. I think this might be that game.

Since nobody mentioned it yet:

It was a Metroid prototype:

Now, Nintendo weren't interested so now I guess it's turned into an original IP?

To be fair I have to wonder how Mercurysteam's take on Metroid would have fared. Especially when you consider how Other M turned out. The gameplay was fine and a lot closer to the 2D games, but the story was horribly written and did a lot of damage to the Samus character; making her someone we almost don't even recognize. Would Mercurysteam have made a better effort in terms of story? I did not like their CV games for obvious reasons, however their take on a Metroid story might have been far better then Other M's was.

I looked at their Twitter page and I saw some new artwork on the header that looked neither Castlevania or Contra.

https://twitter.com/mercurysteam

Looks like it's gonna be a new IP after all. Odd that they didn't show it at Gamescom though, guess it aint ready yet.

Glad Nintendo declined or there would have been a tsunami sized shitstorm not even Federation Force could have caused.

Good. MercurySteam can't ruin Metroid now.

See, I'm right about the mecha suit.
It's good that Nintendo ditched Mercury Steam.

Well, while I'm not especially sad Nintendo turned them down, I'm kinda pleased that some studios are at least still thinking about Metroid and pitching ideas to Nintendo. It means that someday, maybe someone has a great idea that actually becomes reality. I am unsure what studio would be a good fit for Metroid, but I'm sure someday, somewhere, something good could happen. It's funny though, that I don't even trust Nintendo with making a new Metroid anymore..

If this project was indeed turned down by Nintendo, then good.
I seriously doubt it would have been any better than Other M.
After what they did to Sypha... I call for a vote of no confidence.

To be fair I have to wonder how Mercurysteam's take on Metroid would have fared.

Metroid: Shadow of Brinstar. Starring Seamus Aran, a grimdark badass cyborg-woman, utilizing her trusty, beaten up sawed-off laser blaster, as well as axes, sniper rifles, flamethrowers, etc. It would be an edgy survival horror, filled with DOOM 3-style demons and undead. After all, Metroid is basically about a woman surviving a hostile world of aliens. Accept change.

It'd also be totally linear, but you could replay some levels so people will say it's non-linear like the old games!

Also post-credits you find out that Seamus Aran became evil and says "Eu sunt Mother Brain!"

They'd throw A LOT of random names in the game but they'd have nothing to do with the original people/places. The hero of the game would be called Maridia Brinstar, fighting against the evil Samus Space Corporation on the planet of Ridley. Mother Brain is a computer where you can save your game and get missions. Oh, and Zebes Aran is a dog companion.

No Samus. You are the Metroids.

And then Samus was Ridley.

The thing is, I know Mercury Steam can make a decent enough game. I hate LoS so much, but that's because it doesn't feel like Castlevania to me. On its own, it is a great game. I would just rather see them do their own IP than others properties.
