On a scale of 1 to Streets of Rage 2, how much does the most recent Shantae game play like a Metroidvania? I'm considering downloading the 3DS version.

I only played The Pirate's Curse, but by what I have gathered about the other games, I have to say that it ranks more or less around Banana.

This game has an AMAZING ability to avoid pointless backtracking while making you feel like you're truly exploring the map. But it felt a bit too short for my tastes (this can be due to me devouring it, though). Also, the side-quests are fun to complete, and not a total bore fest.

It strays somewhat far from the Castlevania way of doing Metroidvania, and tries its own thing. And it works very well.

Director of that one 1999 fangame that is not out yet.

You could say it has a similar style of map layout like that of Order of Ecclasia. The areas are segregated but you can explore them. I too felt the game was somewhat short despite the game designers saying it was much, much bigger then Shantae 2. But I guess it felt short for the same reasons that theplottwist gave. Overall it's a better game then either of its two predecessors and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also Shantae controls much better then in Shantae 2. Give it a download and see for yourself.

If you're referring to Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, the map is not totally Metroidvaniash, but everything else about the game is.  You start in a town, and from there you can "sail" (i.e. teleport) to other islands.  When you beat the boss of one island, you unlock the next island.  Each island has an explorable map, and you find things on one island that help you progress on another.  Even after you beat an island, you sometimes have to go back later with a new ability to explore more.  It's a great game with a really nice soundtrack and beautiful pixel art and animation.  I still consider it a Metroidvania.  I've played the first few hours of the first Shantae, and have beaten Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse.  I consider Pirates Curse the best of the three.

I feel Pirate's Curse is very similar to Monster World IV. I've got it on the WiiabU because I love big-ass pixels and the hi-res art of Risky's luscious tatties.
Oh yeah, and also:

I prefer the squidsmith. I love 'em tall, dark with the white hair, and she also sports a nice rack that's probably in the latter size E area. Plus she can really swing that hammer!  :o

Wait, what's this? They kept the pixelated graphics, and didn't go HD.

*sheds a tear*

Yeah I liked the GBC game, the girl definitely has appeal, and she isn't shooting at people, or fending off aliens, or look like HD dogshit. Hmm and possibility PS3 may see or did see the latest one.

It is a portable port, and they did not have the budget to do 3D much less a complete game almost. It borrows many sprites and backgrounds from previous games, and has incomplete ones for the new stuff. The game barely came out at all from the looks of it. They did not get a chance to implement a lot of visual things they wanted to, you can tell right away.

I recently found out that Henk Neiborg did the graphics and animation for the second and third Shantae games.  I had no idea who he was until I got curious about who was responisble for those beautiful graphics in The Adventures of Lomax, and its spiritual predecessor, Flink.

It's always interesting when you find a common link between things you really love.

Not only did Henk do Shantae, Lomax, and Flink, but he also did Contra 4.  I only mention this here for those who really like the visual style of Shantae.  If you're into beautiful pixel art, check out some screenshots of The Adventures of Lomax.  I really think it's one of the most gorgeous 2D pixel art games I've ever seen.  Too bad the controls are a bit twitchy.

Freak mentioned the girls having large titties, definite fanservice in that area. Has been a  trend for a long time now.

Why do all the female characters in Shantae have boobs?

If they don't have boobs they can't feed their younglings.

Don't all females have boobs? Silly question.

If you ask why they all have BIG boobs, fanservice, plus perhaps all men working on the games. Yes it's an old fashioned mindset, but perhaps it's something they might also desire in real life, a woman with big boobs, who knows.
