I can't remember were I saw it but was the vampire killer going to be a sword at first, but they couldn't make it look good so they went for a whip instead.

I heard this as well. Supposedly a sword was difficult to program for some odd reason so they chose a whip instead. I'm still trying to figure their logic out on that one...

Well I think when Simon is in  mid whip it looks  a bit like they were trying to get it to look like a sword, but it just would not come out right. And it looks a bit like rubber, so they must have thought ok lets make it a whip like  Indiana Jones, or Vampire Hunter D.

TBH LoI's Vampire killer (and CoTM) are potentially the most powerful whips in the entire series.
Ironically, Castlevania rather downplays the full power of a whip, it can generate sonic booms faster than guile on a turbo controller

Thing one: it's less useful overall than the Combat Cross (no added mobility or ability to really grapple).
Thing two: only Gabriel Belmont can use it (it's not really something you could "pick up" and use).
Thing three: It's not even really a whip. It's Gabe's blood.

Now I considered including the "Dark Pain" whip Alucard used in Mirror of Fate, but seeing as it's portrayed as being functionally identical to a mass produced Combat Cross (just with extra eeeeeeeeeviiiiiiil included), I elected not to as it would be a redundant entry. It does look fucking sweet though.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.
