I'm beginning to wonder now if any game franchise even can really be long lasting like James Bond, Doctor Who, or Star Trek.

To be fair, all of those properties you've mentioned are older than most of the well known video game franchises let alone a vast majority of video game franchises and series.
Basically, video games are younguns in comparison.

When people mention Zelda, take one look at the Cdi games and are instantly revolted. Granted the Zelda games are a more distasteful representation of the Nintendo franchise, but it's also because the undertone of the games in general are a) more niche than a more universal title (eg Mario) and b) taken more seriously by its fans than said titles.

Oh yeah Zelda's another long runner.  Also Ys is another one.

Which was entirely my point. We will likely never see a video game series (possible exceptions: Mario and Tetris) that will really survive to see 50 years old. Most crap out well before they hit 20 and most that get that far are Franchise Zombies by the age of 30.

Videogames live by the rules of Logan's Run.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.
