Title: Whatever happened to Mathias Cronqvist?
Post by: Mathias Hyperion on July 06, 2008, 12:49:06 PM
Alright, so I've now accepted that he IS Dracula, without the need for any reincarnation in 1431. They're the same person.

Anyway, but we've had 4 games - 5 if you count Order of Shadows - since Lament of Innocence with, to my knowledge, no mention of Mathias whatsoever.

IGA gave Dracula an interesting origin story and a history with the Belmonts, and then pretty much forgot about it.

I'm not really sure what I want from replies to this, but I was just making an observation.

He's in every game as Dracula... What more do you need?

Yeahh...I dunno if they will ever explain it fully in the games, or just leave us to assume everything that happened, similar to the plot-holes in the Mega Man games that have gone unexplained for ages.

Some mention of his previous name, his previous life, his friendship with Leon... It was all a pretty good story and it's gone virtually ignored by later CV games, which seems strange considering that LoI was part of IGA's vision.

Well, since LoI there has not been a new game starring a Belmont.  My guess is that there will be a lot on this in the 1999 game.

I still don't like to think of Mathias as Dracula. Dracula should be an ancient evil force; not some emo bishie tactician who gets MAD.

Maybe if they woulda explained that the soul of Dracula entered Mathias' body when he was at his peak anger. Then it's more Mathias being possessed by Drac and Drac totally taking over his body from there.

Interesting side note: one of the generals against the real Vlad Tepes Dracula was named Mathias Corvinus (of Hungary). It is thought this is where IGA dervied the character's name from.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracula_%28Castlevania%29

But yeah I don't like Mathias being Dracula.

That news is ancient.  We were talking about Matthias Cornvinus before LoI came out.  But no, Mathias is Dracula.  You could count Chaos as part of his mind, because in the japanese manual for Cv3 it says that Dracula makes a pact with a powerful evil deity(most likely chaos) to gain the power he shows to have in Cv3 and after.

Funny thing is, in Castlevania he is more ancient and more evil than any of his previous fictional incarnations.. Unless you count Dracula 2000, which I hope you don't =/

i know i'm pretty forgtful, but i really don't recall anyone/thing named chaos brought up in any castlevania title.

my guess is, eventually there'll be a game between lament and 3.

Yes, in AoS they named the powerful evil force that super powered Dracula "Chaos" it is the final boss in the game.  It probably stems from the famous quote from SoTN "This castle is a creature of Chaos."

the chaos in sotn wasn't capitalized. alucard meant that the castle is chaotic, as in it changes its shape each time someone enters it.

and i still don't believe the whole chaos crap in aria was a sentient being. it cheapens dracula. in my opinion it's either his dark powers that were sealed within the castle by J and friends (which also explains why they flow back into soma in aria and dawn), or at most something like a mass of raw power from which drac takes whatever he wants/needs to use.

going off from the prologue text:
Quote
the pitch black sun is holding chaotic darkness together, trying to rouse a sleeping soul as if looking for its missing other half...

which i understood as:
Quote
the pitch black sun
eclipse.
Quote
is holding chaotic darkness together
within it dracula's dark powers sealed by Julius in 1999
Quote
trying to rouse a sleeping soul
are trying to awake soma's soul that until now was unaware of its orgin after it was purged of all of the darkness and sin when dracula was sealed,
Quote
as if looking for its missing other half...
wanting to rejoin their other half. one half being soma's soul, other being the dark powers, or "chaos".

it just makes me think the whole chaos in aos is the dark part of dracula's/soma's soul that was sealed away and manifests itself as a bunch of weird looking stuff, as twisted as dracula's soul was.

But no, Mathias is Dracula.

According to IGA.
of course. after all, iga created mathias, he's his character. iga can decide who mathias is. :o
Title: Re: Whatever happened to Mathias Cronqvist?
Post by: Alexc2808 on July 06, 2008, 05:24:53 PM
I think it is pretty clear that Chaos is sentient.  It's what made Dracula into the dark lord, the opposite of god.  That is made clear by the fact that whoever wields it becomes the dark lord.  Add that to the description in Cv3's manual to how dracula gained so much power "A pact with an evil deity" it really all comes together.  You can believe whatever you think is cool.  But I am trying to put together the puzzle pieces we've been given.

I guess it is also possible that this "Evil deity" gave Dracula the chaos power source in exchange for Dracula's and Alucard's (yes in the Cv3 manual it says he gave the deity Alucard's soul aswell) souls.

My point is he shouldn't have been created at all. I think more than anything, Mathias cheapens what Drac supposedly is.

Well, just don't blame Iga. He didn't decide have Dracula be a Transylvania knight gone baddie. It was from "Vlad the Impaler" that Stoker created Dracula, and he has the same story: Wife(both named Elizabetha  :o) dies, Mathias/Drac goes mad, renounces god and becomes a vampire. Iga just based him off Mathias Cornivus instead of Vlad the Impaler.  :P

but in the games it was said that dracula, or dark lord is the opposite of god. i can't see something that's an opposite to an absolute power to have something above it. that's also why i believe chaos is simply a symbol, or a manifestation of the evil in dracula's soul after it was separated from his mortal body and soul for good, and became something else

makes more sense when soma dies to it too. the evil side of him rejoins his soul and they become one again, when he can't resist it anymore (and even arikado who's been slowing down the flow of the power back into his soul isn't enough then), fills the soul with hate towards humanity and reverts it back to how drac was before his death.

if i'd have to compare it to some movie, hellraiser 2/3 comes into mind i guess. in part 2 the main antagonist, pinhead reverts into his old human self (reawakening from the nightmare he's been in for years), but all the evil he had inside him was too strong, and it manifests itself into a pillar of souls to return in part 3.

in 3, the human half is a good guy (soma) who tries to help the protagonist, and the cenobite/demon half the evil one (chaos/dracula) who tries to kill her. eventually at the end they join back into one entity, with pinhead becoming the dominant one (soma dracula, both bad ends) before they're both sent back to hell (julius comes and kicks soma's ass)

lol

why is Mathias so obseseed as to turn absolutely evil over Elisabetha?
he didn't turn absolutely evil. he just became an 'atheist', except he had enough power, knowledge and ability to "flip a bird" at god by becoming a vampire. he used leon to achieve his goal.

maybe he was devoted to the god so much, he believed everything will be all right as long as he stays faithful. so when elisabeth died he understood he was mistaken, and interpreted it as the god punishing him "for the lulz"

only when his tragedy repeated again with another woman, lisa, drac snapped.

Damn Matsuda.... and I used to love him. Poor Mikami!!!  :'(  But Light did it too himself. He killed Kiyomi and abandoned Misa, two women who would have done anything for him, and he killed Rem(who also would have helped him, for Misa's sake) and he led his father to death. While I almost dry, I kind of feel he deserved it, and I'm happy Misa was alright, my only favorite character to have survived.

But like I said, Mathias just threw away everything for what he wanted, excactly like Light.

Well, Misa was really just a puppet. I liked her in the beginning of the series, but once she decided to be stupid and just let Light use her like that, I kinda didn't care about her.

Anyway, back to the topic...

*cough cough*

If it weren't for the series of unfortunate events (no puns or references intended, please ignore that) surrounding Mathias, what would have happened to Castlevania? It just wouldn't exist, I guess. Hm... :-\

Yeah, actually, if it weren't for Mathias CV wouldn't exist. Walter would have just gone on terrorized Transylvanian men and their wives, but I don't think he'd do anything against all humanity.

I think IGA means well, but he always gets himself in a corner during the developement process. It's like this, I truly believe he WANTS to write a long and detailed story, but for a good story, pacing is KEY. CV games are generally pretty short. You'd need to expand the game's hours to pace the game's story out across the adventure and try not to make the development lop-sided. That's something a lot of RPGs do well BECAUSE of the hours it takes to unravel the plot. You have many instances of character intereactions, spaced nicely across periods of dungeon exploring and time progression. IGA seems like he goes in saying, "Okay, this is going to be deep. I've come up with THIS idea, THAT idea, I'll flesh it out during the course of the adventure......WHAT? I only have a short time to flesh it out?!! MANNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!". Had there been more instances in LoI, or even more in CoD, where you actually have more than a few scenes within each area(and each area was just pure mindless exploring), perhaps he could've fleshed out some things better. I'm all for more cutscenes, especially if they'd be used to add more depth to a story.

You know I'll give you that one for the handheld games (due to cart space restraints and the general sparse dialog in those Castletroid titles); but the PS2 ones could totally have been fleshed out better. There's really no excuse not to build Mathias' personality better and then develop it. Show less of Walter and more of him, for instance.

As it stands, they mention Mathias as an afterthought in the prologue and show him one more time in the game. THAT'S IT. You can't build a good, believable character that way; let alone one that's to encapsulate the concept of our favorite villain.

And Curse.... as much as I generally like the cast, there was no real story twists after the first few parts at all. It basically plays out like you thought it would. Also Dracula's appearance feels forced in that one.

Did you not even play the game?  Mathias was so upset because his wife died of disease (viewed as by the will of god) while he was out risking his life for god.  If I believed that, I'd be pissed too.

And he chooses Leon because leon is renowned for being the best warrior around, he was only person who had a chance.

And he wanted the Mathias reveal to be a surprise.

Not to mention, if Dracula were so righteous about his beliefs, why wouldn't he just kill himself and defy God's creation that way instead.

Seems to me you could avoid a lot of bullshit, and without having to betray your best friend or humanity itself.
Title: Re: Whatever happened to Mathias Cronqvist?
Post by: warfreak on July 07, 2008, 05:50:18 AM
Well firstly, perhaps Mathias wasn't that good of a Christian. He was devout enough to go to the Crusades and everything, but he always believe Elisabetha would be there waiting for him when he came home. I suppose he was made that God took her so early from him. ..Or he could have had an insane side from the very beginning.

It is an attempt to humanize Dracula and to give him motivation instead of just being a random evil force. Also, it actually gave the Belmonts reason to hunt him down. To be fair, the Dracula in the 1992 "Bram Stoker's Dracula" movie was very similar: Vlad fights for God, goes off. Elizabetha dies, Vlad gets angry, decides to renounce his faith and become a vampire. ..I'm not sure if he was called Vlad, but yeah.

Not to mention, if Dracula were so righteous about his beliefs, why wouldn't he just kill himself and defy God's creation that way instead.

Seems to me you could avoid a lot of bullshit, and without having to betray your best friend or humanity itself.
That would have been too common, I suppose? Plenty of people kill themselves, I guess Mathias just wanted to have greater revenge for Elisabetha. He might have wanted company with Leon, too --> woman he loves dies or something. [I haven't played LoI, so I'm not sure about this one] Betraying humanity is the best thing to do if he wanted to have ultimate revenge against a superior being. o_O
Title: Re: Whatever happened to Mathias Cronqvist?
Post by: darkwzrd4 on July 07, 2008, 07:23:16 AM
This is my understanding:

After Elizabetha dies, Mathias finds the crimson stone, which has the vampire curse, and is corrupted by the curse.  That plus the grief of losing his beloved wife is what drives him mad.  The fact is that for some reason he needed a powerful vampire's soul.  My guess would be either to complete his transformation or just to give himself a power boost (it isn't explained well enough).
Also, I don't think that he started to hate humans until Lisa was killed by humans.  I mean how else could he have fallen in love with her.  If I wasn't human and my human lover/wife was killed by humans, would want revenge too.  I just don't think that I would go as far as he does.

Of course, this is all speculation.  The details aren't explained well.  Maybe, everything will be explained in a future game or in manga.  After all, there is suppose to be some manga that explains somethings in CoD that weren't mentioned in the game.

Don't Christians believe that you go to hell when you commit suicide?

What could be a better reason then revenge for Mathias to betray humanity?

that'd be a single thing though and i doubt it could affect god much. on the other hand, becoming a demon, continuously twisting the faith etc. would a bit more. humans die and go to hell all the time, but if one of them becomes a part of hell it's something different.

Quote
I think the coolest dracula creation would have been at the point when Mathias steal walters ebony stone and fuses it with his crimson and (shoot I forget the third one) The fusion of the three should have summoned Dracula's true devil form to inhabit the form of Mathias or combine with his body to give rise to  a totally new life form.
leon smashes ebony stone into pieces with his first strike.

and rinaldo said the vampires don't need philosopher's stone because all it does is grant eternal life or something, and vampires have that already.

The origin of Dracula according to Igarashi is about as retarded as the origin of Darth Vader according to Lucas, and about equally cliched for why they turn evil. What I do is I ignore the story of Lament of Innocence, just as I ignore everything about the Star Wars prequels and pretend they don't exist. This makes things far more satisfying.

Actually, to be honest, I don't remember LOI's story too well, but I think I recall Mathias' story being similar to the one in Bram Stoker's tale (that is, if Coppola's film is faithful, since I haven't read the book, lulz), but somehow made really dumb. It just bothers me.

Dracula has ALWAYS been obsessed with his dead wife.  In every incarnation of the character.  Do you know anything about the actual story?  The whole Dracula novel is about him trying to take Mina because she is the reincarnation of his lost love.  I don't understand why you love 1 dimensional characters so much.

Characters need a motivation beyond, I am tough and bad.  That is just stupid.

And about him being a whiney pussy, losing a spouse is the 2nd hardest thing a human being can psychologically go through.  It does not make him a pussy because it affected him so.  And for you to say so is insanely disrespectful to anyone who has ever lost a spouse.  I really am starting to think you're about 13 or something.

And about christianity, we won't even get into that, as I am an atheist.  If I told you what I believe the true purpose of christianity is, I'd probably get banned.

You keep saying "no regular person..."
He was not a regular person.  He was a crusader.  He fought for god, risked his life, KILLED for god.  And god "Mercilessly stole away the one I(Mathias) loved most"  It is clear that Mathis became a little crazy after that, which is 100% understandable.  As is his hatred for god.  And no, killing himself would not be as much of a "fuck you" to god as becoming immortal.  It is a direct remark at god saying "I will not do as you wish".

This is revenge, but a far more complex and well thought out revenge.  It is a better origin than any other Dracula origins spun out throughout the ages.

Don't forget Mathias was essentially a genius.  So he would be able to formulate plans that most of us would not.

That idea is at best silly.  I have read dracula many times.  Dracula was very evil.  Look at what he did to Renfield.  He was using Jon to get his home in England.  There is no doubting that he was going to kill Jon, as he and his wives had killed before.  He would never have agreed to feed off of only animals, in most vampire folklore/fiction they can't gain sustenance from animals.  Dracula was evil.  evil as can be, he needed to be taken out.

He didn't just kill Jon for the same reason bad guys never just shoot James Bond.  it would be a very short boring story.  Dracula is obsessed with his lost wife.  I have read the book as I said before.  And no, I never said that anyone who loses a loved one should go on a killing spree, I said that it is very disrespectful of you to call someone being so upset at the death of their spouse a pussy, and it is.  His initial reaction was completely understandable, but over time he went insane with grief.

1 dimensional characters are "bad ass" when you're 7.  People with actual intelligence and a love for storytelling prefer characters with motivation.  As a creative writing major I find 1 dimensional "evil characters as a cop out for a writer who can't think of an interesting back story.

Being evil for evil's sake is the dumbest thing possible.  No one, NO ONE thinks of themselves as doing the wrong thing.  They do what they do because in their mind it is what's right.  Even Adolf Hitler thought what he was doing was for the greater good.  You need motivation, or your just another 13 year old fanfic writer.

I have a feeling of pity for Mathias, up until he has Sarah killed.  Even less after he murders thousands of humans in 1476.  He has a sad past, but that hardly makes us justify his slaughter of so many humans.

Darth Vader is in no way shape or form a 1 dimensional character.  He has three whole movies of back story.

And as I said, Mathias goes insane from grief.  It happens sometimes.  There have been people who go crazy from the loss of a spouse.  In Cv Mathias is one of them.  And thanks to that, the whole castlevania story comes out, in a chronological sense.

not if you go from the first one, he's just some random guy that killed Luke's dad. It wasn't until later when they decided that he was Luke's dad and they wanted to show us what he was like before he embraced the DS that they started adding backstory. If You go from a new hope he's just a thug and it works because of the performance and superb acting. Action figures skyrocketed of DV when ANH came out and people were already wearing DV t-shirts.

New Hope was one part of the story.  It was never meant as a stand alone.  So your logic makes no sense.  They don't have to give a character backstory right away.  They can wait until far later in the story to introduce.  Like say... 17 years into a video game franchise.  ;)

No, regardless of whether he knew he'd have the money he had it written as more than a stand alone.  Hell, Mark Hamill said in an interview that Lucas had stories written for up to episode nine done while filming the first movie.

Yes, but regardless if he meant to make him one dimensional or not.  Darth Vader is a very very 3 dimensional character, and he would not be as loved if he had remained as 1 dimensional as he started.

My point exactly.  He was very 3 dimensional and done well.  My point is that 1 dimensional characters are boring, and it is always better to give motivation then to just make someone evil for evil's sake.

Your anology doesn't work.  that's like saying a character is 1 dimensional because that would be like saying a character was 1 dimensional because he seemed so in the first few chapters in a book.  The story was not finished.  You can't just take part of a story to define a character.

Let's get back to cv, ok.  To be honest, I think that the more we understand a character, the better.  After all, a villain who is evil for evil's sake is boring and the story of LoI makes drac seem more human.  It simply makes the villains more complex and allows us to get inside their head.  Then again, not everyone is interested in that.
Unfortunately, most people just want a clear cut "good vs. evil" game with no significant plot twists that is easy to follow.  However, I think the really intelligent players would want a complex story with significant plot twists to make the story more unpredictable and not so clear cut.
This just my opinion and I apologize is I have offended anyone.

..and it is always better to give motivation then to just make someone evil for evil's sake.

Iago from Othello comes to mind.

That dude was evil because he liked being evil, there is no real backstory to him save from his details throughout the play, which show that he's jealous, conniving, and just... EVIL... for no apparent reason.  I think he's just a schadenfreude that enjoys being a jerk for no apparent reason, or "For the lulz" as they say in the Interwebz.

That's not to say he's 1-dimensional.  I'd say quite the opposite; he's so multi-dimensional that we just cannot understand him at all (like a Tesseract. :P).

luca blight(suikoden 2) comes to mind. he did shit simply because he could, and upon death exclaimed how evil he was, but he had no backstory, and people thought he was one of the best villains ever.

For someone trying to be so pedantic, you seem to forget that Bloodlines (where all this Stoker nonsense came from) says that Quincey’s son was there to see his dad die. Remember that part in the book? No? Well that right there shows that the novel can’t be used to disprove anything stated in game, because SPOILER they are two different universes. Dracula in the book is NOT the same character at all as in CV. Same name, different character.
lurk moar. the part about john seeing quincey killing drac and then dying at the age of 2 was bullshit that americans added to their version.

didn't say it doesn't, just the example you used was totally wrong since you tried to pass almost fanfiction level material as a fact. :o

Wow, this spiralled out of control. I'll just reiterate the point (if it's already been made) that Stoker did not come up with the reincarnation story. That's one thing that kinda bugs me (because I'm like that) about MrP's Castlevania Realm, it talks about "the troubled vampire menace" of "the novel" Bram Stoker's Dracula. Just goes to show that Coppola did a good job of convincing people that his film was a faithful adaptation of the source of material. It's a resonable film, quite interesting, but it does take liberties (with the novel and with history).

DISCLAIMER: I haven't read (most of) the novel Dracula.

That's exactly right and the dracula in stokers book was also more human in that he could venture out in the daytime no problem he just couldn't exhibit his full power and was like a normal guy, just a bit faster. Stoker made him out like an anomoly which is cool and what I love about the book. Satan didn't send him to earth through a pact or anything like that he's just here and is trying to survive like the rest of us.

Yeah it was crappy example but it was the first one that poped into my head. Which is weird because I'm usually the first to shout foul at the US manuals...

My Castlevania-Fu has weakened in my time away.

Here's my question what about the vampire that ruled the demon castle before mathias/dracula? doesn't that make him the first incarnation of dracula or will iga make him just another stepping stone backwards in history possibly making a caveman castlevania game where you have a club that eventually becomes the hilt of the vampire killer?

He was a powerful vampire.  He was not the dark lord, Dracula doesn't become the dark lord until a little before Cv3.

ok well regardless to the title of Dark lord
mathias receives his powers from the stone witch at one point in time was in possesion by walter
they say the stone is how dracula keeps getting reborn
well then doesn't that by logical thought mean that walter was reborn into mathias thus making the thought possible
that bastard the lord of darkness is a lot older than just what is told

Ok.  You have some things wrong, I'll fill you in on how it worked. (don't wanna sound mean, just know a lot about this series story).
Walter never had the crimson stone, he even mentions when he is dying that "I(Walter) could not obtain the crimson stone, but one day it will be mine!"  He says this because his powers are so strong that they will kind of auto-revive him after a while, as he later says "With my powers, I will surely come back to life.".  Now it could either be for the same reason, his control over death, or even becomeing the dark lord (since he never died prior to having this title) that regenerates Dracula every 100 years.  It seems likely that it is just because he is a powerful vampire, as Walter apparently had regeration powers aswell.

Yes this is how it happened.  This may also be how drac gained the ability to "auto-revive" every 100 years, assuming his underlings don't revive him first.

nobody said walter had control over death though.

the fact that he appears only at the very end together with mathias, and only to take walter's soul suggests more that walter had a deal with them, that as long as he keeps his part of the deal death will leave his soul alone, hence he'll be able to resurrect. but then mathias comes, orders death to take walter's soul and sacrifice it to his crimson stone.

then walter's all "hey mathias, dude we had an agreement. i was supposed to bite this guy's girlfriend, make her a vampire and make him emo, and you were supposed to keep death away from me so that i wouldn't be sent to hell and be able to return in case i died. you traitorous swine."

I never said Walter had control over death.  I said whoever had the crimson stone did, Walter never had it.  And no, it is Walter's immense power that revives him, he says exactly this... "With my powers, I will surely come back to life."
