Whatever happened to Mathias Cronqvist?

Alright, so I've now accepted that he IS Dracula, without the need for any reincarnation in 1431. They're the same person.

Anyway, but we've had 4 games - 5 if you count Order of Shadows - since Lament of Innocence with, to my knowledge, no mention of Mathias whatsoever.

IGA gave Dracula an interesting origin story and a history with the Belmonts, and then pretty much forgot about it.

I'm not really sure what I want from replies to this, but I was just making an observation.

He's in every game as Dracula... What more do you need?

Yeahh...I dunno if they will ever explain it fully in the games, or just leave us to assume everything that happened, similar to the plot-holes in the Mega Man games that have gone unexplained for ages.

Some mention of his previous name, his previous life, his friendship with Leon... It was all a pretty good story and it's gone virtually ignored by later CV games, which seems strange considering that LoI was part of IGA's vision.

Well, since LoI there has not been a new game starring a Belmont.  My guess is that there will be a lot on this in the 1999 game.

I still don't like to think of Mathias as Dracula. Dracula should be an ancient evil force; not some emo bishie tactician who gets MAD.

Maybe if they woulda explained that the soul of Dracula entered Mathias' body when he was at his peak anger. Then it's more Mathias being possessed by Drac and Drac totally taking over his body from there.

Interesting side note: one of the generals against the real Vlad Tepes Dracula was named Mathias Corvinus (of Hungary). It is thought this is where IGA dervied the character's name from.

But yeah I don't like Mathias being Dracula.

That news is ancient.  We were talking about Matthias Cornvinus before LoI came out.  But no, Mathias is Dracula.  You could count Chaos as part of his mind, because in the japanese manual for Cv3 it says that Dracula makes a pact with a powerful evil deity(most likely chaos) to gain the power he shows to have in Cv3 and after.

Funny thing is, in Castlevania he is more ancient and more evil than any of his previous fictional incarnations.. Unless you count Dracula 2000, which I hope you don't =/

i know i'm pretty forgtful, but i really don't recall anyone/thing named chaos brought up in any castlevania title.

my guess is, eventually there'll be a game between lament and 3.

Yes, in AoS they named the powerful evil force that super powered Dracula "Chaos" it is the final boss in the game.  It probably stems from the famous quote from SoTN "This castle is a creature of Chaos."

the chaos in sotn wasn't capitalized. alucard meant that the castle is chaotic, as in it changes its shape each time someone enters it.

and i still don't believe the whole chaos crap in aria was a sentient being. it cheapens dracula. in my opinion it's either his dark powers that were sealed within the castle by J and friends (which also explains why they flow back into soma in aria and dawn), or at most something like a mass of raw power from which drac takes whatever he wants/needs to use.

going off from the prologue text:
Quote
the pitch black sun is holding chaotic darkness together, trying to rouse a sleeping soul as if looking for its missing other half...

which i understood as:
Quote
the pitch black sun
eclipse.
Quote
is holding chaotic darkness together
within it dracula's dark powers sealed by Julius in 1999
Quote
trying to rouse a sleeping soul
are trying to awake soma's soul that until now was unaware of its orgin after it was purged of all of the darkness and sin when dracula was sealed,
Quote
as if looking for its missing other half...
wanting to rejoin their other half. one half being soma's soul, other being the dark powers, or "chaos".

it just makes me think the whole chaos in aos is the dark part of dracula's/soma's soul that was sealed away and manifests itself as a bunch of weird looking stuff, as twisted as dracula's soul was.

But no, Mathias is Dracula.

According to IGA.
of course. after all, iga created mathias, he's his character. iga can decide who mathias is. :o

I think it is pretty clear that Chaos is sentient.  It's what made Dracula into the dark lord, the opposite of god.  That is made clear by the fact that whoever wields it becomes the dark lord.  Add that to the description in Cv3's manual to how dracula gained so much power "A pact with an evil deity" it really all comes together.  You can believe whatever you think is cool.  But I am trying to put together the puzzle pieces we've been given.

I guess it is also possible that this "Evil deity" gave Dracula the chaos power source in exchange for Dracula's and Alucard's (yes in the Cv3 manual it says he gave the deity Alucard's soul aswell) souls.

My point is he shouldn't have been created at all. I think more than anything, Mathias cheapens what Drac supposedly is.
