Okay, i'm back! now i know i am gathering a bit of hate from my previous polls, mabe i just suck at starting interesting convos? anyway i just hope this will lighten things up, but to the point, i want to hear you opinions and rants about castlevania l.o.i.
The graphics at the time just blew my balls off, i was like 10 at the time and they were spectacular! no two areas ever look alike and the music and sound was just as good. My only problem is it's waaaaayyyyy too open ended there are abosolutely no ''pointers'' so in scatterish place like the garden you'll get lost VERY fast, if your not careful, but the movement and control is so good that it is possible to overlook this. So leave a comment and tell me what you think of lament of innocence. :)
-
It's not the conversation.. it's the fallacy in it... like saying you don't want to have popular characters while maintaining 2 of the most popular one. (MK fighter)
That said, it's better than the forum dying. So go crazy, just don't spam... Jorge might smack you some if you do.
As for LoI, I hated it. I hated the level design, I hated the weird whip swing which wasn't swinging, but more like hit a pole and suddenly get a boost mid air. And I actually hate Leon, although Sonia was denied placement regardless, Leon sort of made sure of that, and Sonia > Leon. I need am Ayami Sonia pic with all the goodness off art or a really insanely awesome fan art is fine too. Sadly Sonia is few in comparison to the others and a lot of them suck. Not all mind you. I also didn't like the story, though the whole crusader thing was kind of cool I guess.
-
I thought Lament was great, except for the level design. It has some really good production values. The animation is gorgeously smooth, the enemies are really detailed, and the environments are very CVish. But the level design is so atrocious that it pulls the overall quality of the game down too far. Had the level design been on par with games like Devil May Cry and God of War, I believe Lament of Innocence would have put CV back on the map, bigtime.
-
Lament of Innocence kinda spelled the beginnings of doom for the series in just a few areas. While I enjoyed playing the game and loved some of the tunes, I was vastly disappointed with the story arc for Dracula's origin; it was nonsense and not needed. It made a mess of what was already known at the time. The origins of the Vampirekiller I didn't mind as the whip never had any real origins to begin with; Just rumors from fans and the fictitious 'Poltergeist King' in the American manual. Leon Belmont... He comes off as IGA's attempt to remove and replace Sonia Belmont. The two do look alike with the same short hair (excluding Sonia's french braid style) and blue eyes. He came off as more of a youth then a man due to the voice actor in question. A little too youthful in my opinion. The part involving the Ebony and Crimson stones. While they were important plot points for the story, the true Dracula would have no need of them (which was not what happened at the end). Dracula became the king of vampires through the power of his own will. A feat which Mathias could never hope to accomplish and thus used the two stones to gain his power. Walter was kinda cheesy but in a classical B-movie way. I thought that he made a good villain albeit a temporary one. I also didn't like how Castlevania existed before the reign of Dracula. Dracula created Castlevania through his own power, and as such the two are bonded. Whenever Dracula is ripe for another resurrection, the castle will sense this and prepare. Over-all, LoI was an interesting game but not suitable for a proper origins story as too many contradictions make it fall flat on its face.
-
The level design was horrible, the combat was mostly repetitive and the CGI looked cartoony. But it still had the atmosphere and every now and then, my guilty pleasure is going over the dialogue from Walter's defeat onwards :D
-
's alright. Flatass levels and incredibly hokey story and hilariously cheesy dialogue didn't do it any favors, but the atmosphere in some levels and the music make a brilliant combination.
Especially the Opera House level. Holy crap.
-
LoI got me into Castlevania. It is my favorite Castlevania game. The fighting in fun, the VA is good, I admit the level design isn't the best but it's not the worse either, the backgrounds all look good, the music is great, and I think it has a good story. Not to mention Walter Bernhard is one of the best villains in the series IMO.
Before LoI I was like what kind of a pussy uses a whip? After LoI I'm like only a badass uses a whip! Period!
-
Dislike, but not enough to not play it.
The Story had alot to it, but was extremely poor in execution
Combat was shallow but somehow not too boring...
Bosses.... LOL
Level Design... Poorest aspect of Both PS2 Castlevania games, this one is okay-ish in a bad way.
Detail..... The rooms were there, yet there was nothing that gave you an eyeful, The best looking area is the one with the black reflecting floor.
Music - Oh yeah, this is awesome, absolute best aspect of the game other than the artwork.
Joachim was pretty cool, but Pumpkin was sheerly for novelty as it was a Leon clone with no upper stats.
Cutscenes... Looked worst than the game itself.
Despite it being pretty bad almost all around, the game is pretty good... after beating it I only picked it up around 5 times over the 5+ years I have the game.
-
I feel like I've been reading these same opinions since 2003.. there's nothing new anyone can say about LoI is there
(sad panda face)
-

Dracula became the king of vampires through the power of his own will. A feat which Mathias could never hope to accomplish and thus used the two stones to gain his power.
he only used the Crimson Stone to that extent. Leon destroyed the Ebony Stone with vampire killer when he faced Walter.
I also didn't like how Castlevania existed before the reign of Dracula. Dracula created Castlevania through his own power, and as such the two are bonded. Whenever Dracula is ripe for another resurrection, the castle will sense this and prepare.
that isnt exactly castlevania. that's Walter's castle, and I would guess somewhere in Europe, but not eastern europe. (names range from french to itallian, with Walter's being English.) When Walter was killed, his castle crumbled to pieces. Wouldnt make sense for that to happen if mathias took over it. Dont forget mathias went into hiding after that, starting a new life in Romania under the name Dracula Vlad Tepes. Thats where, I imagine, he forged his castle through the powers of chaos.
Over-all, LoI was an interesting game but not suitable for a proper origins story as too many contradictions make it fall flat on its face.
because Legends was a much better origin?
Sonia > Leon
Sonia has no real character aside from a dead father/grandfather. leon was fleshed out in his game.
legends was a terrible origin story because it really didnt tell us anything new. It didnt give us an origin for why vampire killer is anything special, and the antagonism between the Belmonts and Tepes, is pretty bland.
-
But Mathias did become a vampire through his own will; he didn't let himself be bitten. Instead he used his skills to steal Walter's power. I mean, would stabbing a cross and drinking its blood have been a better option? Or a homoerotic conversation with a vampire that looks like Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt or Placenta-Muncher Cruise?
I liked LoI's story, for the most part. "I'm gonna betray my best friend in a terrible way to rebel against a God I've spent my life fighting for.
- And I or someone in my family is gonna stop you, old friend!"
certainly beats
"My grandfather gave me some whip to fight a bad guy. Why? Just because" or
"RAWR! I IS GONNA MASSACRE YOU ALL CAUSE I THINK A MASK CAN RESURRECT MY WIFE BEFORE HER CORPSE GETS FILLED WITH MAGGOTS. THEN I'M GONNA PUNCH SATAN".
LoI had plotholes, obviously, but not jarringly more than the other available origin stories.
-

I don't think it was just about becoming vampire, he wanted to be a strong one as well. Hence, the Walter plot.
-
Well, let's see what I can say:
Good Points:
Provided a plausable origin for the whip
detailed areas
Playing as Joachim was fun
Great Music
Interesting Boss fights
Bad Points:
Areas were too flat (not as flat as CoD and thus are superior)
Game was too short
Mathias's reason for what he did was childish
Lacked most of the traditional areas (clock tower, chapel, etc.)
This game is a mixed blessing. It provides a explanation for the whip's origin and how the Belmonts became vampire hunters, but the Dracula origin and the reason for the Belmonts going after him were just bad. It would just be so much better if the reason they went after him was because he was a powerful vampire that was a threat to humanity. You don't really need anymore than that. That being said, the Mathias character was kind of pointless.
-
Lacked most of the traditional areas (clock tower, chapel, etc.)
Um. The first stage of the game is called House of Sacred Remains which contains many chapel like rooms.
Anyway, I thought LoI was awesome.
-
I have never actually played LoI but the whole backstory IGA created for Dracula is stupid and was totally unecessary.
-
As its been said before the Level design was bad.
The lack of platforming did not help either.
But other then that the game was pretty good IMO.
I love the story of Mathias and Leon and how it played out in the end. The combat was also pretty fun and I liked using the orbs for Item crashes. The graphics where also pretty amazing and well detailed. And last but not least the music was just amazing. Some of the best Castlevania music I have heard in a long time. The soundtrack was superb.
So even though it does have its obvious flaws it still was a pretty good game that I really enjoyed.
-
Yeah, the level design killed LoI for me. Much like in CoD, I constantly have to look at the map because I have absolutely no idea where I am or where I'm going. Many rooms look more or less the same. It's a shame cause I truly believe that LoI has the foundation for a really good 3D Vania. The combat wasn't particularly interesting, but varied environments could've saved it. Also, the game seems a lot more polished than CoD, which looks flat out ugly at times. LoI visuals have aged more gracefully IMO. I'd give LoI a 6.5/10.
-
what happens when you beat the game as Pumpkin ???
-
It's a game that succeeds in a lot of areas, but fails so hard in one that the whole thing just falls apart. I can play it now and enjoy the good, but there is absolutely no forgiving the bad. The level design is so redundant (thus, the entire game is redundant) that I quickly lose interest when I turn it on. That said, I have a lot of respect for the game's more positive attributes, like graphics, story, music, and battle system.
-
ineresting opinions, i do now see more of l.o.i's flaws the levels were very flat . ps: thx for comments and it's cool that the previouse controversy i had gathered didn't effect anyone.

It's okay dude :) Jorge lets those know when they've gone & pushed too many buttons around here. Some of those people haven't been back to the Dungeon in a long while too. We're a fairly open-minded group here and though we have our agreements and disagreements, we all get along pretty well.
-
what happens when you beat the game as Pumpkin ???
You get a silly picture montage of Pumpkin with the other characters while Admiration Of Clan plays in the background :D
-
The game is short enough that the level design didn't bother me that much- I've beaten it with 100% map completion in under three hours; that required some clever use of tickets, btw.
LoI had more platforming than CoD, but that isn't saying much. It's almost like the designers weren't sure how to put platforming into a 3d setting or something, so they didn't really try.
And the whip-jumping was a bit silly, but can't at least one of the 2d Belmonts do something similar? Julius in HoD? So yeah. A better solution would have been to have him swing like in SCIV, but... just saying...
You get a silly picture montage of Pumpkin with the other characters while Admiration Of Clan plays in the background :D
Joachim's ending was better, though Pumpkin's ending is cute.
About the story... well, Castlevania is not known for it's fantastic stories, but I think that LoI's story gets a lot of unfair hate.
As far as presentation of the story goes, the script and hammy voice acting (though they got good voice actors) did not help AT ALL. In SotN it was cheesy-charming but in LoI it was cringe-worthy. That said, I'd hope most people were able to look past that. XD
As far as plot itself goes, let's face it; we'd have been surprised if the game DIDN'T involve rescuing a DiD or brainwashing or betrayal.
Ignoring the historical inaccuracies as far as dates and the designs and names (even alchemy itself) in the game (because Castlevania is hardly historically accurate in that respect beyond making references to the real Vlad's death and such) I liked the background story given.
There should have been more information available about who Joachim was; I kind of resent the Japanese only phone manga for that. >_> It also would have been nice to know a little more about Walter and perhaps how exactly it was that Rinaldo knew Mathias' family. But that's not a big issue.
I liked how the whip was created; it gave the weapon a new, almost menacing side. The poltergeist king was only in the English version of CV3, right? Am I the only one who thinks it is kind of weird that a poltergeist king would give a family a weapon to destroy vampires with apparently no strings attached?
Now as to the controversy involving Mathias being Dracula and how he became Dracula, I thought it fit well with the 'character' of Dracula that was already established in the series. Mathias' intelligent but rash and spiteful nature was perfectly in line with everything else we'd seen in Dracula. I also don't see how it is a problem that the Dracula in Castlevania is presumably Vlad III; all it means is that at some point the guy assumed that identity.
I find this idea of Mathias using the Crimson Stone and Walter's soul to become a super-nasty vampire who then wanders off and becomes even more powerful as time goes by to be preferable to him being bitten. That just... it's just not as cool, you know? Another issue is that if vampires gain strength over time, then Dracula should not have been as powerful as he was if he was only Vlad III. LoI's explanation is logical; Vlad III/Dracula was already very old and was from the start superior in nature to the average vampire by the time Trevor and Co. faced him.
I was glad that they actually made his motivations better than just "I'm a vampire just because" and "I'm killing humans because I'm evil." It is instead "I'm a vampire opposing God because he's a douchebag" and "I'm killing humans because they are douchebags."
And finally... I am sick to death of people complaining about Legends being stripped from the canon story. The only thing Legends actually 'explained' was where Trevor Belmont came from, and that was like something out of a bad fan fiction.
I don't hear anybody whining about Circle of the Moon being stripped from the canon. You're all just haters. XD
-
People only complain because it was a Guuuurl that got stripped from canon. And so naturally, that means IGA is Sexist. Not that the game as an origin added completely nothing in the way of actual origins for anyone.
That said, If they retooled it and removed Alucard, (he wasnt born yet) I could see Sonia being Leon's daughter. I mean they are both blond hair blue eyes, (a surprising rarity in Castlevania) Monsters kill Leon while he is an older man, since Sonia is already all grown up, and she must take up the whip to fight monsters, and it doesnt even have to be Dracula at the end. Just some other vampire or monster king. While at the same time, getting "a step" closer" to Dracula. After all, theres quite a gap between LoI and CV3. Which in presumaby, (HOPEFULLY) the Belmonts spent it tracking down Dracula and eventually relocating to Wallachia where they were exiled due to their supernatural powers.
-
@X: thanks :)
@everyone on this page, i agree the level design is very flawed, damn! I HATE THE GARDEN!

I can see Sonia in a reboot of Legends which is same characters, completely different time and story....
and i'll state this again, IF the plot ends up being Where the Belmonts Track Dracula from LOI to Cv3, Castlevania will definately be down the shitter with that being the dumbest thing ever top put in a plot.
-
What would be so stupid about it? He's probably the most powerful vampire there is and Leon specifically said he or one of his kids will get him eventually.
-

What?
The only time I've seen Julius in HoD was in some fan hack.
I also don't understand what is dumb about the Belmonts tracking Mathias down. It's exactly what Leon said they would do. And, um, if I was Leon I'd do the same thing. It only makes sense to track down the guy that had your fiance killed for no good reason and, uh... kill him, too : p

The only thing that would be wrong with the Belmont tracking Dracula down during the gap between LOI and Legends would be if the belmont in question found Dracula and beat him.
We have already established the legend that Trevor was the first to beat Dracula.
And it would be weird if we had a game where the Belmonts track down Dracula only to not get a chance to beat him or end up getting beat themselves.

I'll just put it this way...
1094- Events of LoI
END OF LOI -Castle Collapses, Leon Escapes, Dracula was confirmed to Travel parts of the world in epilogue.
1476- Events of Cv3
Please, elaborately explain how a family would track a man with Dark powers, Various Identity Changes and Predominantly underground for 427 years...
Mind you that the ONLY source of info can come from letters, which take weeks to months to arrive given the time, and most of the letters could be red herrings.
Plus there is a Huge probability that later generations would just lose interest in dracula since he isn't doing anything in that time.
There is no way possible this could be explained in such a way people could "buy" that Bullshit.
Belmonts becoming Vampire hunters generations after (which also clicks with Cv3's Prologue) is a better explination and also doesn't sound as Over the top stupid.

hmmm...
Good point!
The only reason why Trevor was able to find dracula is because he came out of hiding after the humans killed his wife Lisa. It would be pretty hard finding him if he is indeed using his dark powers and brilliant tactician mind to hide from the world.
-
i think dracula's discovery was pretty coincidental
the belmonts probably lost track of him in those 400 years and hunted other vampires instead
-

Maybe Count Olrox perhaps?
I have always wanted a CV game with him as a major villian ever since I first seen him in CVSOTN. ;D
-
i can make an entire section just on Orlock.
He's one of the OLD Vampires Left (Since only Older Vampires have ALL sharpened teeth)
There is alot of room and alot of material I can do on Orlock by himself.... that's primarily why I want him in my Cv2 Remake.
-

Hear about guys with vampire powers, and go after them. Perhaps the big bad they're looking for would be one of them. If they're planning on hunting the night, they'd do well to whack those other ones anyway, so it's not like they'd be going out of their way or anything.
-
It's confirmed that the Belmonts became vampire hunters not too long after Leon's struggle, not "generations after cuz they lose interest." The PoR timeline states that they kept busy hunting down various vampire lords, each one they slayed added to Dracula's power. IGA is also on record saying that "if he were to shed light on this period, it would be more about, how did the Belmonts manage to track Mathias for so long? Being vampire hunters doesn't just mean Dracula, so who else were they hunting?"
So for someone to say there's nothing more they can do game-wise between LoI & CV3 is "utter bullshit." People will buy them as long as the gameplay's good.
"b-but it's called Akumajo DRACULA!"
Dracula can still be featured without him being killed/fought. Also, they can make a reverse-AoS that showcases how Mathias gained allegiance from all those monsters he controls.
-
Yeah, I don't get the people who think a story set during 1094-1476 wouldn't be interesting just because Dracula wouldn't play a major part in the plot.
-
Then some people complain tht he's always killed 5 minutes after he resurrects, so why would they be opposed to him and his "herald" having substantial screentime in a game set in the 12th century? They could also pull a Rondo of Blood and have him make a cameo appearance in the background as Casius Belmont battles Lord Vallen in an "old, Austrian castle."
The possibilities are endless.
-

I don't have a problem with Dracula not being fought in a CV game.
After all CVLOI,CVAOS,and CVDOS proves that a CV game can still be a CV game without him as the final boss.
If they where to make a game like that I would like to maybe see a few cameos or scenes involving what he is doing during that time period. Maybe he hears about a unkown belmont going after Count Olrox and remembers Leon's words about his clan hunting the night.

Yeah, something like this. I wouldn't want them to be only interested in him, of course. On the contrary; the LoI-DC gap is the perfect time to fight other baddies and introduce other supporting characters. But I'd like Leon to have made his offspring know that whenever possible, they should keep looking for Mathias because he is a rising threat (according to the PoR bonus timeline poster, he gains more power from each other vampire slain).
-
Keep in mind that CV3 also stated that the Belmonts were exiled from the country due to fear of their abilities. Several games could explain why they were so feared by the people they were protecting, and why the Church refused to aid them.
After all CVLOI,CVAOS,and CVDOS proves that a CV game can still be a CV game without him as the final boss.
Even LoS? :P

Castlevania Needs Moar Horror Icons.
I would LOVE to see a Castlevania where you are against Dr. Frankenstein and his Army of Monsters!
So many Possibilities yet Konami chooses the Meta-Pattern of Dracula....

I agree.
Did anyone else interpret the Stage 2 boss in Rebirth as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde?

I agree.

...if the Mr. Hyde serum contain Venom (What Bane uses to be Huge) then totally yeah!

Yeah. Seemed pretty obvious to me.
-
I loved the atmosphere and somber mood. Loved the music too, and the design of Leon and his many subweapons and animations. Actually I want to go play it now. Wish they would re-release on PSN in HD..
-
It's the one Castlevania I always have a particular urge to replay. The game has a great aesthetic, and I remember back in 2003 that the graphics were fairly tubular. The marble hallway in Walter's keep were excellent. The music ranks among the best in the series, as well as the character designs.
That said, the 3D models were okay except for Sara. To quote a Finnish bastard, she looked like a 'space toad.' The action could get repetitive as well; they really ought to have branched out the combos. And finally, I can only play it in short bursts. As great as some areas like the Ghostly Theater look, seeing the same rooms and hallways over and over kill the mood.
Otherwise, for a long time it was the best 3D Castlevania. I imagine many say it still is. I just wish the level design was reworked into something more immersive, and the combat a bit more impressive.
-
Yeah, besides its flaws it is great! i feel like playing it now too.
-
Lament is a great game. Some of the hallways are repetitive but the atmosphere throughout that game is just amazing. Couple that with some of the best music and it just makes it better. A lot of people bad mouth IGA for it, but I always really enjoyed it. It's too bad Curse of Darkness wasn't quite as good
-
The Music, orb system, and the overall feel, maks the level design worth it. it was flat, but it was still fun.
The way they explained the orbs you get upon defeating bosses was amazingly amusing to me too. Its like, "what DO those things do anyway?"
"Ummm.... Good idea... Oh I know, why dont we make them magical orbs? that way they enhance Leon's power!"
Well thats ONE way to explain em. I mean, fuck even DRACULA dropped one in the original.
I also find Walter just really fun as a character. He seems more interesting than Dracula almost, if only because... well, come on. Its Dracula. We already know anything needed to know about him. both from Castlevania lore and pop culture lore.
Walter though, is someone a bit more unique. He certainly LOOKS cool, and sounds awesome. His personality is also fun in that its different from Dracula's. While Dracul and other like him are dead serious, Walter is just an extremely bored immortal. He doesnt give a shit about anything, and just wants to amuse himself. Its all a game to him, which he likes to play frequently. (which again, explains why you find weapons and subweapons lying around a castle. You the main character are not the first person to attempt to traverse the castle)
Pity we cant get to know him better. for THAT theres definitely very little room. especially since he was killed in his debut game as a plot device for Dracula.
maybe a prequel minimanga or drama track of some sort?
-
I agree Walter is awesome. Not to mention "Behold my strength now this is power!" is one of the coolest attacks in a Castlevania game.
-
maybe a prequel minimanga or drama track of some sort?
That would be a good idea.
Also it would be nice to see his relationship with Joachim and when he turned Joachim into a vampire and Joachim rebelled.
I have always wondered who turned Walter into a Vampire.
Maybe he was born a vampire?
Maybe he got his powers through dark means like Mathias?
Even by vampire standards Walter was pretty damn powerful which really does raise the question as to what his origin and lineage is and how he became so strong.
-
Didn't Joachim come to the castle to kill Walter like the others would-be heros? Only then to be captured and transformed by Walter into a vampire and then locked away in the waterway stage?
-

Where was that said?
All I recall being revealed was that he was turned into a vampire long ago by Walter and rebelled not to long afterwards only to be beaten and locked up.
-
Joachim was another awesome vampire villain. None of the teleport fireball stuff here! Nope, instead, psychokinetic swords. I liked how he had the two different formations for them.
-
I really enjoy Joachim Mode, though I wish he had as many moves when you're playing him as he did when you fight against him... and that you could teleport from Save Rooms or something since you can't use tickets.
What?
The only time I've seen Julius in HoD was in some fan hack.
???
http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Julius_Belmont/Harmony_of_Despair (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Julius_Belmont/Harmony_of_Despair)
He can whip the Magnus thingies.
-

This could be the case. I haven't played LoI in a long time so this part of the story is a little fuzzy. I only remember that Joachim had a hate-on against Walter. The other thing I can recall is that Joachim wanted Walter's Ebony stone, But the stone chose Walter instead of Joachim. Joachim also laments about not having the Crimson stone.

What I wanna know is how the Forgotten One came to be in the castle. Was the castle built around him? Did he trip down the giant flight of stairs leading to his chamber and tore his legs off due to the fall?
-
maybe he was a very ancient vampire who was punished for his ''unholiness'' your guess is as good as mine.

The game itself tells you he was a monster created by mortal hands, who was imprisoned in the Prison of Eternal Torture because it nearly ended the world with it's uncontrollable power. Where it was, tortured and weakened. Skinned alive, cut in half, and one of his arms cut off, resulting in what we fight. As well as that mask/helmet on his face. Then he was (or before the torture) hanged on hooks to support him, and stayed there for God knows how long, eventually forgotten by all, as his name implies.
Now, who or what defeated him is the real mystery. Maybe Walter had a hand in it. Who knows. But if Leon was able to defeat him, then its not a stretch to think he was somehow defeated by those who created him. Im going to guess he was put in the castle, not the castle around him.
Im also going to think we are not supposed to really delve too deeply into it.

What would have made LoI better is if they added more areas, had more platforming like the ones for N64, and the whip swinging like LoS. They could have also given Walter a second form, but three battles back to back could be pushing it.
Also, Leon is the epitome of what someone in his circumstance should be. He lost someone, but he didn't let his grief consume him. He grieved, but moved on. Mathias did the exact opposite.

umm Walter actually had a second form.
It was during his "Big Bang attack" where he shoots the huge blast that covers the area.
For a brief moment he turns into a demon looking creature and shoots the blast.
I know he doesn't stay in it long but it is a second form.
-
Walter's form, when he does that giant area blast attack, is sorta a giant red bat. Looks pretty cool.
-
It was sorta like how Dracula has his monster form too. (and I assume Alucard does as well, judging by his gargoyle petrified form)
-
yeh kinda does look cool.

The graphics of castlevania is the best game i ever played, the blood on this game is like the same amount as real life pretty much. The bad guys are very awsome, the bosses of the level is the best part of the game.
