The Belmonts definitely have a sword yes. But it's not a Katana blade. After all during that time in medieval Europe very little to no interaction with the far east ever took place until the American/Japan trade co-op started. And that's hundreds of years later. And I agree that in close quarters combat (CQC) you'd need a short-ranged weapon.

Ya, normal people in Japan and the West didn't interact much due to the laws.  But you could always sneak in and out and maintain underground ties, especially in a work of fiction.
