Eh, I had no real problem with the Crimson Stone. it goes better with the idea of Dracula becoming a Vampire by his own machinations, and not by being sired by another vampire. He stole Walter's soul, and gained vampirism through it, along with Walter's powers.
Dracula from the novel, seems to just have plain refused to die, and was reborn as an undead spectre.
Gabe doesn't really follow suit there, but he gets an A for effort in my book by virtue that he was already ridiculously superhuman before becoming a Vampire. Vampirism simply gave him a perk or two to survive the demonic real the Forgotten One dwelled in. As well as immortality. he also was technically sired, but did so by consuming his maker. He didn't just get a few drops of Laura's blood, he took ALL of her blood, killing her in the process and therefore becoming a powerful lord Vampire, skipping all the stages normally gone through by the normal method of siring. (This is a beef I have with that Castlevania series they did on youtube. It's just some creepy guy comes in, gives him some blood, and goes away)
Then he absorbed the Forgotten One's powers. So his transformation was still pretty interesting.
