Agreed, but you know what's worse than a casual gamer? A casual gamer who thinks that they're hardcore gamers.  :-\

Last time I expressed my pity to some pseudo-gamers who badmouth great games like Ninja Gaiden 2, Ikaruga and only play FIFA online, they called me a big nerd.

Does sharing a passion for gaming makes us nerds?

In Reply To All,

I was reading something like this topic on Kotaku ('cuz I'm a cool Nerd guy like that) and someone made a pretty good analogy.

Videogames are like foods.

There are comfort foods, which are foods that just feel good to eat but are not very good for your body, like Potato Chips and Ice Cream, etc.  The equivalent game Genre would be those quick pick-up-and-play games.  Yeah they're fun, and very entertaining and easy to get going with, and most likely a BLAST with multiplayer, but they do not carry substance.

Then there are connoiseur foods, foods that are of high class and high quality.  We will associate these with those games that come out once a year.  Yes, they're quality, and yes, they're very engrossing in whatever they want to portray, etc.  But not everyone likes that type of food.

Then there's the food that is good for you but it's like a salad.  It's just not filling enough, you need more.  Usually short shmups or puzzle games fill this genre.

Lastly, there's the big-course meals that are the games with the big storylines and complex systems.  These are what one should be 'eating' normally... but no one has time to prepare for these.  It'd be like going out to a fancy restaurant and having to devote some time to really enjoy a meal.  Not everyone has that kind of time to really devote to a game, so most people who are on the go will just 'grab a quick bite' (easy pick-up game) , instead.

It doesn't mean we should stop selling those other foods, just because some people like a particular genre, get what I mean?

Hmm... I guess this explains why there are so many BurgerKings and McDonald's places and not as many Salad/Juice bars around, huh.

I don't think he needs elaboration. I know of a lot of those.

In Reply to Clara, or whoever else mentioned nerdiness

Yes, the rest of the world does think we're nerds because we are so into our video games. The world's become a hateful place and if you aren't like everyone else, you quickly become the hated.

OKAY mister BuzzKill!
:P

I think if the industry is catering to some crowd and you don't like the games for that crowd, don't buy 'em.

It's the reason I don't have a Ps3.

Four pages and Jorge is the only one who's mentioned No More Heroes? Everyone who has access to a Wii oughta play through that, it's loads of fun.

Plus, House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return is a buttload of fun. Sure, it's a port of two games, and they probably play better on other consoles with a lightgun, but it's inexpensive and fun nonetheless. I really hope that House of the Dead 1 and 4 make their way to the Wii, as well as more exclusive rail-shooters, like Umbrella Chronicles...but better, since that game wasn't so hot.

Also, Elebits. Forget what the critics say, that game is a blast. Once I beat it, I've got Dewy's Adventure waiting for me, another game by the same developers.

I need to pick up Zack & Wiki soon before it disappears into obscurity and costs a ton.

As I've gotten older, I've found myself having less patience to really get good at a game, and also even to beat the ones that aren't that difficult. Takes too much time a lot of times--"serious" games have become so lengthy and bullshitty to have to sit through, one of the reasons I dislike RPGs (aside from the fact I'm terrible at them). I'm not the gamer I once was, and any of the difficult games I bust my ass over are ones I'm familiar with and have beaten time and time again. I just get bored with so many newer games, but the ones where I kind of just sit back and take everything in and don't have much trouble playing through are the ones I enjoy most nowadays. I had a much more fun time playing through Hotel Dusk than with most other games I've picked up in the past few years.

For the record, I thought Mario Galaxy was freagin' amazing and, along with Sin & Punishment, was my reason for buying the Wii when I did last November. Both were well worth the purchase alone.

Also, I find it hilarious that members of a Castlevania message board are whining about shitty/easy/accessible/"casual" games, considering everything that's come out after SOTN has been terrible (aside from the N64 games, which I personally enjoyed), and they're all easy enough to be finished without breaking a sweat, including SOTN. Which, in the case of SOTN, is no detraction for me personally, considering I've been more enthralled by atmosphere and visuals than ball-busting gameplay in recent years, but those other games are just terrible--bad designs, bad music, really boring gameplay, etc.

LOD is certainly more complete, and is obviously more along the lines the game should have been to begin with, but it kind of bugs me how the voice narration for Carrie and Reinhardt is missing in LOD. Also, I like the original first level--not more than the replacement in LOD, but I like it. Reasons enough for me to still cherish CV64.

Also, let's not forget the swell alternate costumes for Carrie and Reinhardt in CV64, not present in LOD. Carrie in her Maria dress with the ability to see her white panties... :o

I really wish they could remake those for Wii or something. I still play them on my N64 (infact, I just beat Cornell's hard mode again and made it to the castle center in normal mode with Carrie) and I love them. I've beaten every combination of character and difficulty and still play! I hate reinhart though because in a game like that, I find his abilities very limited. He doesn't run as quickly as Carrie or Cornell, if you try to slide under something, you'll probably hit it anyway because he's bigger, and he has no long ranged attacks that would be helpful for battles like Death and the Spider Queen. Carrie is small, agile, and pwns the world with those energy blasts of hers! Her chakrams are good for close ranged combat too, so she really has no weakness. Cornell is bigger than Carrie, yet still is my favorite character, partially because I like his story, and partially because he's really strong and fast, so he's the best character, especially in his wolf form! However, yes, in LoD, I do miss the voice acting. I made it to the part where Carrie meets Dracula's servant and I thought, "Hey, where are the voices!?"

I hate the castle center level, which is probably why I'm still typing this instead of playing Castlevania, but...I probably should. Bye, hope I don't get blown up my magic nitro! ;D
