Well, here's the way it works:
Once you get into the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, you add people's friendcodes to your friendcode list. They also need to have added your code to their list.
You go to "Friend Battle". IF there are friends online, they will show up on the list as a name (no longer as a code). You can send a 'Battle Request' to them by selecting their name. You will see some kinda 'matchmaking in progress window'
On their end, if they're in the menu, they will spot a 'letter' icon next to "Friend Battle". If they pick Friend Battle, your name will show up with a Letter icon next to it.
If they select you, you wait between 10 and 30 seconds and the matchmaker will initiate a battle.
The problem is if A. they're fighting someone at the time, they won't see your request until they get back to the battle menu, and B. if they send you a request and you send them a request, they won't connect. There's gotta be someone clicking on a 'letter' name for best results. Otherwise it'll stay 'matchmaking' forever even though the both of you may be free.
The person sending the battle request is hosting. Their connection will determine the speed, etc. The person receiving the letter and confirming it is the client. They will be Player 2 in the match. I don't think they get to choose the stage, Player 1 does.
I hope that's cleared up the confusion.
