I was thinking today about how Zelda has had both cartoony entries, and darker, more mature realistic entries, and for some reason, I was reminded of how the Zelda franchise and the Mario franchise were created by the same man.

So, out of sheer curiousity, I feel like posing the question: how would you guys feel if Mario got a similar treatment? A darker, more realistic approach, ala Ocarina of Time, or Twilight Princess.

I can't imagine how a serious Mario game could be taken seriously. I mean Zelda has a fantasy motif. Mario has... a plumber and a pretty cartoony variety of characters.

SERIOUS Mario, eh? Sounds silly. Very silly. Kind of like trying to make Mickey Mouse SERIOUS. Oh wait...

Bad idea! The most serious I want my Mario games is Mario RPG serious, which really isn't serious at all...

A slightly darker Mario would work I think. It would be trippy and unnerving like Labyrinth crossed with Lord Of The Rings and stirred with Hellboy. Bowser would be intimidating, the goombas and troopas would be creepy, the Mushroom Kingdom would be other worldly.
If done right that is.

Paper Mario: TTYD already worked as a slightly darker Mario(the Twilight Town stuff and the Shadow Queen revival).

Mario would be hilarious if it were serious. I mean, it just can't be. The though of Mario bouncing around mushrooms and crap with a completely straight face makes me giggle. Thankfully, Nintendo isn't dumb/brave enough to try it, unlike Sega (recent Sonic games) and Konami/Hudson (Bomberman Act Zero).

Mario is from Brooklyn, right? That's what the magazines wrote about him in the 80's anyway. So, the idea of a gritty urban setting, with Mario being a fat italian plumber getting caught up in some... drama. Maybe they could make it a survival horror game set in the sewers of NYC

Haha, jesus christ the game would completely suck, but I want it nonetheless!

A serious mario... hmm..

I don't know how you could possibly make a serious mario, considering that the whole idea and concept of mario is that of a fun-loving, fat, jolly, comical italian plumber. Nintendo uses "mario and the gang" to get kids to buy their products. He's not exactly a dynamic character. Nintendo would need to flesh out his personality and give him deeper motives, a past, ambitions, hopes, etc.

It could, however, be quite innovative if it was ever made.
