That doesn't mean he can't do stunts...  When I saw him with the fire whip I thought of Castlevania. ;D

Most weapons training in movies these days relies on some form of specialist(s), so why not turn over the duties of the whip-work to him? Strong, standout combat scenes are really what will make or break the film adaptation in my opinion. And we all know that the greatest special effects in the world can not compensate for solid staging and choreography.
