the CV versus thread

1. Super Castlevania 4 or CV Bloodlines

2. CV legacy of darkness or CV curse of darkness

3. Super Castlevania 4 or CV 1

4. Castlevania Chronicles or CV 1

5. CV circle of the moon or CV order of ecclesia

6. CV 64 or CV lament of innocence

I did not include the sorrow games or a couple ones from the GBA. Nor did I include the Dracula X Chronicles or Symphony of the night.

my pick would be, 1. SC 4, 2. legacy, 3. SC 4, 4. CC, 5. Circle, 6. CV 64

6. Lament of Innocence over CV 64? In many ways Lament does have some things going for it. First better overall music, and much better figting. It also has a softness to it in the graphics than CV 64's darker more barren graphics, but for some that might be a negative.

good picks though, still I'd take SC 4 over CV 1 anyday, and CV Chronicles over 1 as well. And for me playing Lament is really hard, mainly because of the repetitive rooms and feel that the game was made in a month.

your opinion I guess we just don't have the same tastes. For you to pick that pile of CV crude otherwise known as Curse of Darkness over Legacy is hard to understand. Lament I might understand over CV 64, but curse....

Curse is to anyone that has IMO any sense of what a quality video game experience should constitute, is nothing more than garbage, with or without the CV Name slapped before it.

Indeed, One might think that Curse would have corrected any of Lament's problems.

Too tough so.... HoD

You obviously have a thing for Hod, I never played it even though it came right after circle of the moon which I did play and I liked a lot for its mood and difficulty. I didn't understand what you meant about Curse of Darkness though....

Most sequels are anything but a step back. Take Devil May Cry 2 as a perfect example. Lots of time spent on perfecting the first new IP, than after that the games are rushed.

another thing that we gamers tend to forget is that the people that make video games are human beings. They run out of inspiration, most of their ideas are usually used up in the first game.

Closer to home, take Symphony of the night, they pured IMO even though I've only seen the game played on youtube, they pured in everything in that one game.

that's why there's nothing left, and why the new metroidvania's don't have any of the charm.

Symphony was the first and last of its kind.

CV64, and LoD control like shit. Horrible camera, horrible player controls. The combat was stripped right out of 2D Castlevania, and is unfitting for a 3D game. Not to mention the music, or lack there of.

It may have had better level design than CoD or LoI, but what's a good level without good character controls?

CV64 was more frustrating than anything.

That said none of the 3D games really hit the mark, but some are noticeably better than others.

LOL, please don't ever mention DMC2 again. Also DMC2 didn't feel inspired true but that doesn't explain Dante's change of skills. Why is stinger a lunge now? I really enjoyed my superhuman sword dash.

As for CV the games have been consistently good but since there isn't really a change from game to game we gotta find something to pick at.

I think we have some constructive criticism here. The main reason I fell in love with them is because I was young, and I didn't know any better. But come on, the music isn't that bad. But music is all about tastes and some of us CV fans really liked the music in those 2 games. Yes the control does take some getting used too, but if you play the games a couple times through then you get used to working the difficult camera and the overly sensitive controls.

Still I'll take bad controls over bad level design, because at least there is something to admire visually in the 64 games. The Castle Wall stage, the Villa stage, The Tower of Sorcery stage, The Underground Water stage. They are all distinct and different looking. In the PS2 games every stage looks and feels almost identical, save for some minor changes to the floor and color, and ofcourse the music.

Take your pick. But I do understand what your saying, you really, really gave the PS2 games a chance, and tried hard to appreciate them for what they are. Decent figting games. I did the same for the 64 vania's and tried to appreciate them for the Level design, and cool dark atmosphere that they DO provide, imo.

As for CV the games have been consistently good but since there isn't really a change from game to game we gotta find something to pick at.

Its the difference between being passionate about the series and just being accepting of it. In my opinion its a broken series. The last good, and I mean really good game that was released was Circle of the Moon. I've played all the games afterwards except Order, and they are boring for me.

As much as you want me to not compare other game series like DMC, and think its good to compare them. It's all about talent, in the end that's what were talking about. Why are the teams that make God of War, or Ninja Gaiden, or DMC So talented at making 3D action games, while the Castlevania team isn't?

Heck their art style has gone to crap IMO, so all they have is the classic good castlevania music and an overemphasis on a stupid ass timeline that doestn' matter to begin with.

The only thing the series has consistently had that make it above and beyond other game series is great catchy music.

IMO of course
