I was surprised about the no new logo. ...I don't think they'd have this connect to that certain female vampire...but maybe...

I don't know, watching the trailer again, I can't convince myself its Castlevania at heart (and the less excited I get)...On the other hand, if it didn't have the CV name, we'd all be saying it's a copy off of Castlevania with the whip and all. Really weird. I did definitely want a change from IGA, so I guess I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now until we see more. It does feel less parody-ish than some of IGA's efforts for sure (IE: no Henry VIII/Charlotte jokes thank goodness). I think the voice acting sounds off in the distant land of Highlander, but I'll ignore that. the trailer's close, but it hasn't matched that vision I had in my head of a perfect 3D Castlevnaia yet. (We all have our own visions, though, don't we?)

EDIT: Reply to #204:

OK, you make very valid points. It is a different animal than SotC; but to me, it seems to take some inspirations from it (perhaps indirectly) that skew the art direction (not the same as SotC, but that move it away from the gothic-horror of CV.). The more I see the trailer, I guess maybe Lord of the Rings might be better to say. If I were to use ONE WORD to describe the art direction, it'd be "Gaelic."

Therefore, there's a way this game could fit very well within the current canon, as the origin story of a certain cracked-mask-wearing female we already know from past games. There's no need to scrap all IGA's work with the timeline.
WoW!!
Thanks totally for bringing that one up. Just why wasn't I thinking of her. Both that mask and Camilla/Vampira look related.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'll admit that after seeing some feeds last year about 'Lords of Shadow' and reading that this game wasn't originally going to be branded Castlevania; I was a little turned off, but understand that the whole 3D franchise desperately needed a dramatic overhaul.

Perhaps after seeing what MercurySteam had created, Konami and others thought they had envisioned what everyone all along expected Castlevania to evolve into over time, but was never actually realized until now.

MercurySteam didn't exactly triumph with 'Jericho', but there was some obvious overlooked talent, and hopefully this will be mutually beneficial for the future of Castlevania and their studio.

At any rate. I think they deserve the chance, and I agree that would still enjoy a good side scrolling portable romp from time to time as well.

Don't get me wrong, there are a million ways they could do this wrong.  If it's too generic, too flat, or has other problems it could easily become unenjoyable.

However, this team seems talented and I have no problems putting faith in them that they will produce one hell of a game.  Not to mention kojima is overseeing this, meaning it'll still have classic bits.

SO I watched the trailer again and did some thinking about what UnManuel said.

The mask itself can bring the dead back. This mask will be the key to Gabriel's wife resurrection. After that, darkness flows within her and she becomes known as Camilla?

Just my saying lol

It's a worthy guess, except that they said this has nothing to do with Castlevania.

Very well could be. I don't mind if they leave Dracula out a spell either. It might do them some justice to create a new compelling story through multiple games that eventually lead to Dracula.

Either way no good could possibly come from resurrecting a loved one using dark powers. That just screams tragedy and classic gothic literature.

Just as how Gabriel almost looks like Simon in Simon's quest.
I have a feeling this Marie will be like Camilla.

I've quick developed a list of 10 must-have Castlevania features this new game should have to pass the "Shoe-horned Castlevania Test":

- Candle whipping
- Whip-toting, Conan-like dude (checked =)
- The castle
- Dracula is the backbone of the plot and he makes a physical appearance towards the end of the game
- Monsters from classic horror movies
- Tight platforming (LoI barely passed, CoD failed)
- Catchy music including one remix at least (HoD failed)
- Giant statues (don't ask)
- Medusa heads
- Platforming-centered clock tower (CoD epicfailed)

Say, what is your list? =)

This is no further different in style and tone from post-SotN games as the games from SotN and on were different from the classic Castlevania, so to me, it's almost like hypocrisy to say this doesn't feel like Castlevania, when it hasn't felt like Castlevania since before SotN was released.

Regardless of that, I think it looks great. It's clearly been given the epic treatment that Castlevania deserves. I'm glad that Gabriel isn't nearly as girly-looking as most of the Castlevania heroes we've been getting, and the voice-acting is superb. I'm sure Dracula will figure into it at some point, but right now, I don't think they're so worried about that as they are establishing that this is a BRAND NEW Castlevania.

Also, the points about the mask and a certain she-vampire are interesting.

Yeah, I'm a bit concerned about that too.

Have to agree. I wouldn't mind a massive retconning, but I'd like to them to create a coherent timeline using the best of the current one.

All im going to say is that nothing IGA has ever done has made me feel the pure excitement the way this title has because my honest opinion would only enrage all the IGA lovers and I dont have time to argue via interwebs. This game simply looks amazing in every possible way it possesses the very soul of what Castlevania should have been. Its time to forget the past
