Rumor has it that 'Metroid: Other M' will have a new preview in the next Nintendo Power (Issue 251).

Hopefully it will clear up the confusion about the 3rd-person/1st-person 3D gameplay & 2.5D gameplay. Personally, I'm hoping there will be at least parts of the game that are 3rd-person 3D ala Mario 64. I'd like to *see* Samus navigate a dynamic 3D space.

I'm so excited to see more of this game. I'm hoping you can switch between 3rd and 1st person, for better aiming and what-not. Hopefully we'll find out soon,

Yeah, kinda like in any 3D Zelda.
That was what I was hoping for when Prime was anounced.. But heck, I loved Prime anyway.
And no matter what, i'll probably love Other M too

This is easily my most anticipated game of 2010! Hope it becomes the best Metroid among the gems of the past.

Famitsu Magazine in Japan did a new story about this game:

(there Samus is allegedly saying: "A dream. It's as if I was watching a playback of a tragedy that really happened.")

The mystery of this game's 2D/3D format remains in the vague descriptions, but things are looking positive. I liked how the director said its a huge project. I'm starting to think this game might be better than I am even imagining. Especially after going back to an old Kotaku interview on the project that stated this project got under way in 2006, and that it will feature exploration with new power-ups and many new elements. Some people are complaining about Samus getting an "emotional" story, but to me, she's always had an emotional side, so it makes sense to explore it more.

My only complaint with  this game so far is from the screenshots I've seen featuring Samus. In my mind or more particularly her armcanon is the issue. It's way too narrow at the nozzle and that makes me wonder how Samus manages to keep both her arm and the guntech in that cramped space all at once. At least Retrostudios Prime trilogy had the armcanon down good.

I can kind of see that. I think her hand might fit a fist's length just before the nozzle, and the nozzle itself can expand for missiles and such like in the old games. However, where those missiles are "stored" is another matter altogether. On that note, though, I always felt that in the 3rd person models, the Prime gun-arm was a bit too long and bulky compared to the detailed illustrations of Metroid 2-3. As you say, it might be more functional that way, but I thought it made the suit just slightly less graceful.

Still, no disrespect to the Prime games, as they've kept Metroid alive and did a heck of a job. Prime 1 is my second favorite game in the whole series after Super, and Prime 3 is probably near third. Prime 2 was interesting, but something about it didn't sit right with me. With all of them, however, I just always wished for a 3rd person view beyond morph ball and screw attack.

I actually had a thought about that missile ammo thing back in the day and since then, I've come to this conclusion. To me it's like Star trek's replicator technology. There is no physical ammo in the armcanon itself per se. Instead it's stored as a specific type of energy that solidifies into the missile whenever Samus fires off a shot. Once then energy's been spent there are no more missiles to use. Nifty thought, huh?  :D

That is how I saw it all the time.
I mean, how else is Samus supposed to store 255 missiles in her canon, or armor btw..
And in Prime, the missiles are pure energy.

Just catching up with this now.  Here's the Game Informer piece, I think all-in-all a very balanced write-up:

Not sure what to think though, if I'm honest.  With the Wiimote held sideways, it's a 2.5D platformer, but when the wand is pointed at the screen, it turns into a first-person (rooted-to-the-spot?) point-and-shoot?  It's an interesting mix.  Rllmuk forum goers raised an interesting question with the side-scrolling aspect: if the Wiimote is used to move up/down in 2.5D layers ala Shadow Complex, how do you shoot diagnally, or shoot an enemy above your head without having to enter the first person mode?  Super Metroid used L/R shoulder buttons to good effect there.

Also, IMHO, those graphical environments appear flat and devoid of soul.  If it's going to be like Fusion it'll be an exercise in hand-holding, thus, perhaps a linear affair.

The last paragraph in that article sums it up pretty well though: this is a daring direction.

Not gonna happen.. Since to enter first person mode, you must point at the screen with the wiimote.

But I think this game will be Awesome!
