Way back in 2006, I was contacted to write the original score for a fan-developed Castlevania game. The game looked incredible for a fan game, with graphics that rivaled Symphony of the Night and a promising storyline and gameplay. Unfortunately, the game was never completed but still lives on in the memories of the Castlevania community.

I only released a couple of tracks from the soundtrack to give the fans a taste of what the music would be like. The sampler soundtrack was very well received, and gave me an extra boost to keep writing new tracks. When the project was cancelled, I ceased writing any more music and abandoned it. However, over the years I would revisit and try to write new music, for a now non-existent game. I relied on my imagination to think of what levels there would be, bosses, events, etc in order to compose the rest of the soundtrack.

Four years later, in 2010, I have completed the score. The soundtrack contains 18 tracks of all-original compositions (with the exception of one boss theme). The style is very similar to Michiru Yamane, with the instrumentation resembling that of Curse of Darkness and Symphony of the Night. Rock, techno, orchestral, and hybrid pieces are just some of the musical styles I explored in writing the score.

I am personally sharing this soundtrack to all of you- fans of Castlevania, Michiru Yamane, and video game music in general. I do hope you take the time to listen to the full soundtrack, and I would greatly appreciate any comments.

Sincerely,
Geoffrey Gunn

Cool, I'm there.  Did you use any live instruments when you were creating this or was it a MIDI Controller job?  I'll leave my impressions in a few days.

The soundtrack is predominantly made up of MIDI samples, but of very high quality (I use EWQL Symphonic Orchestra, Storm Drum, Choirs). In the opening title track "Prayer" I took recorded samples of Tibetan chants and distorted them to create a strange texture.

Most of the orchestral tracks were arranged with a performance orchestra in mind, so if they needed a live orchestra they were ready to go. For example, the ending theme "Final Prayer" was written for a string ensemble and female choir.

Haha, thanks!

Well I do compose quite a bit. I write scores for film and performance pieces, and I'm currently working on a feature-length film which is taking a huge chunk of time.

I am still always interested in writing music for video games, so if anyone has a project- I'm all ears.

Geoff, I have to say:

That final stage track from the sampler sounds pretty much like a 1999 Julius theme to me. Thus, why I loved it, especially the use of Reincarnated Soul at the 50 second mark.

Ok, I've given it a once-over and I'm impressed by this album. It's too bad it won't be used in an official game.

Speaking of which, Geoff, have you ever thought of composing music specifically for Julius Belmont?

I know eh, I really wish I could play the final game and hear the music in its proper context!

I have actually thought about writing a fan score to a 1999 Julius Belmont game. I've even recorded some themes for it. If a homebrew project for the 1999 Julius game ever goes in development, I need to be a part of it!
