Now im not saying Castlevania doesn't have it's fair share of these moments, but i always find myself super engrossed in games that have "moments", or preset events that break the pace of the game. Example, the Behemoth and Talos in Rondo... The rotating room in CVIV, but these aren't as good as they could be. In Metroid Fusion, I felt legit suspense when the SA-X was hunting me down. I had to run from an enemy i couldn't kill, i had to hide from it. Even little cutscenes. imagine at the end of a level, you are captured, you wake up in an enemies base, you get out, do a stage where you zip line with your whip down a mountain, ride a horse drawn carriage through the woods, run through a castle fast enough as it falls into lava, have an interlude where death taunts you, have skeletons appear dragging a caged beast, fight the beast as a mini boss, use dynamite to explode a passage way where you fall down an aquaduct at highspeed into and underwater cavern. KEEPIN' IT FRESH YO.
