I think IGA had his chance, but to some extent, was also limited by Konami.

What are you talking about? He was limited by Konami to tell the story of the Battle of 1999? He totally had a shit load of chances but decided to make Dawn of Sorrow, Lament of Innocence, Portrait of Ruin, Curse of Darkness, Order of Ecclesia, Judgement, Harmony of Despair, etc instead.

You have nobody to blame but Iga himself.

To be fair, there is an insane amount of hype and expectations behind a 99 game, and he probably fears he wouldnt be able to meet them.

or he could be waiting for better handheld tech? (like the 3DS?)

IGA DOESNT CATCH UP TO TECHNOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY CATCHES UP TO IGA!

Lol, jk. I would blame him, but we never know how internal machinery with him and Konami might work. We all know that Keiji inafune of mega Man fame was severely limited by Capcom's 'play safe" policies regarding games. In fact, he quit recently because he was fed up with the useless Salarymen at the top of the chain who didnt let him flex his creative muscle.

He had to go over the prototype budget to get a few titles greenlit, a dangerous practice which would have resulted in his firing if the games didnt do well.

The problem is that Iga (by his own admission) never makes a game around a pre-written story.  He always invents his gameplay themes first, and then builds a story around his creation.  That could be a big reason behind him avoiding the 1999 game for so long.....it's messing with his process to have to invent gameplay to build up around a pre-exiting story.

thats actually such an idiotic practice... for a game with nos tory, or very little, well fine. (like the original vanias) but for a game plot-centric, thats a VERY bad idea.

I see you're point, BUT you're giving very little consideration to what Konami may have been asking of him for the time and money being put on the table.  Suppose you're IGA.  Would you not want to save the 1999 battle for an epic series finale?  Would you not want to make the game the best it can be --for a home console instead of petty handheld devices?  Would you not want a budget that would make Hideo Kojima blush?

I think what IGA wanted to do was to perfect 3D Castlevania for the 1999 game --and from our perspective, yes it looked like he had a fair shot.  But did Konami give him adequate resources, a friendly production schedule, and experienced, talented people to work with?  Or did Konami leave him the scraps and leftovers after attending *ahem* MGS *ahem* other priorities?

I don't know, I seem to remember an interview he gave a while back where he admitted that the 3D games weren't a "natural fit" for him...or something to that effect.  I think it's one part Konami hindering his horizons and budget and two parts Iga doesn't do anything beyond 2D games exceptionally well (maybe there's a causal effect there?).  I would say that Judgement was a pretty bold, unorthodox move for Konami to allow...and fun though it may be for some longtime fans...it really wasn't a top notch product.

IGA seems to want to avoid using the same game mechanics from one game to another as much as possible. SotN -> HoD, lost the sword, got the whip, new weapons were 'attachments' and redid the entire spell system to use subs. HoD->AoS/DoS, lost the whip, back to sword, everything is your spells now, collect em all, 3 character party J mode. AoS/DoS -> PoR, drop the everything gives you magic, now less do, but more items, whips return, partner system. PoR-OoE, drop the partners, drop the endless weapons, return to just a few like HoD, mixed with limited AoS souls.

IGA seems to avoid the "I got a whip, and sub weapons" and "CV3 team" whenever possible. This makes me think he's avoiding the 1999 game based on this, aside from it being the climax chapter.

IGA admitted that he was reluctant to tackle the 1999 game because of the hype that surrounded it. He likened it to the SW prequels. Even before the movies were made, MANY years ago, Lucas released plot info in books and such regarding the events of what happened before "A New Hope", including details about the Clone War and final battle on the volcanic planet where Obi left Anakin a "stub of a man". And I mean, those details were released, probably, around late 70s/early 80s. So SW fans had all that time to build up their own badass ideas to what happened. Not saying that Lucas's final vision in the movies was good(it was kinda lackluster), but even if he delivered something good, all those years of SW hype would've made it pale in comparison to what fans thought happened(and like fanfics, everybody has their own different ideas that are unique to themselves).

I don't know why people are making a fuzz about the game not living up to expectations. I mean, what expectations are there? We barely know anything about it all. When it comes to stuff like this I rather not think about it at all because it doesn't excite me in the slighest. I also don't really know what to expect really, or how I should think it's going to be like. But I guess I lack proper imagination. Oh well.

also when people make topics about how they want the story of the 1999 game to be like it seems like horrible fan fiction anyway lol

I think it's just that its the FINAL battle between the Belmonts and Dracula. It's Julius taking down the count and KILLING him for GOOD. Not to mention Dracula is in his top form, more powerful than ever. It's one of those "focal points" in the canon. Because of this, it is expected to pull this all off perfectly in the most epic showdown of the series.

That is a bit unrealistic in that by now everyone has their own idea of how it should happen. You can't please everyone. No matter what way it's made, someone will be completely upset with it. I think he's trying to avoid that reaction.

Sometimes, I think it's better to leave it to everybody's imagination as to what happened. Everybody is pleased with their own version. On the other hand, it'd be great to play as Julius. Besides Simon, he's one of the most endearing characters of the series.
