I had the PAL version, titled "New Generation". I always played the game only with the spear guy, not the one that has the whip, and I remember how frustrating it was, especially the second "try the hard mode" playthrough to see the real ending. It was hell compared to CIV for SNES, and I think the controls played a large part in this. One of the reasons CIV is so good is that you feel you are in control of the main character and the whip he uses as a weapon - in Bloodlines, the controls of the guy that holds the whip feel like an 8-bit game.

Good game though, and the Genesis/Mega Drive did a good job with the music. In fact, the version of Simon's theme heard here is my favorite.

I remember that the final level in this game and the battle with Dracula was a total bitch. I actually haven't beaten the game with John yet, I should probably try it. Eric's Extra jump was nice in that it let you by pass some annoying areas. I don't think the game is anywhere near as difficult as Chronicles, mainly because of the better controls and Chronicle's clock tower level is evil.

Also, after finishing Castlevania 1, did you guys find it to be significantly easier on subsequent playthroughs? I actually do think Bloodlines is harder than it.

in my opinion bloodlines wasnt that hard... really... i mean i consider myself a castlevania expert and all but the game could difficult for you if you started the series playing the gba/ds titles or symphony of the night.

In my opinion the hardest game was castlevania dracula x for the snes. the final battle with dracula on the pillars.

but in any castlevania its patterns. once you get them everything is a cakewalk

True indeed. I made it to level 3, I guess I just haven't played Bloodlines as much as the others. In fact I only made it to death the last and only time I played.
I plan on tackling XX once I'm done with BL.

I feel like I'm cheating on my lovely wife 'Rondo of Blood' with a nasty skank girl when playing XX. I should probably play through it though sometime too. I just kind of put it out of my head once I got a hold on Rondo and never looked back. Maybe I should try not to look at it as a really bad port, but as a different game entirely.

Thats a good idea, because it pretty much is. Either way XX just isn't very much fun.

First stage of XX is not so bad, but after that the game turns into a kinda generic SNES action platformer that lacks all the stuff that made Super Castlevania 4 (and Rondo, of course) such a timeless classic. But yeah, first stage is actually rather good IMO.

Wait, what? That whole game and final battle are easy as pie. Just use the ax to fight Dracula.

I love Dracula X for SNES, by the way. Not near as cool as Rondo, but still neato. I love the graphics. Reminds me of a more cartoony/colorful, less dark Demon's Crest.

Bloodlines I don't find difficult either, although the limited continues is kind of a pain.

As far as classic Castlevania games go (not including Haunted Castle, since arcade games are always tough to mine you of quarters), the X68000 game is probably the most difficult, in my mind. Well, not overall (it's pretty easy), but some of the later stages are a bitch. More specifically, I have the hardest damn time with the clock tower and its boss. But I'm sure there's someone reading this who can breeze through that stage.

There is. Wait till after shes thrown everything to attack (unless you have the boomerang, throw it at every chance) she will then pick up the clock hand and stop moving which is your chance.
Difficulty doesn't really exist in cv once you mesmerize all the patterns.

The biggest trouble is the level itself. A lot of times when I get to the boss, I'm almost out of time and can't wait for everything to be thrown before I start attacking. Can't tell you how many times I've fallen down in that stage, ha.

O most definitely true. The cogs and the peeping eyes are the worst. The level right after the clock tower is 10X harder for me though due to Frankenstein....

The DXX flame effects were amazing, and superior to any effect in Rondo. But uh, beyond that. Uh. The whole stage looked better than Rondo's, but Rondo's had a far better layout. Actually, the level design in DXX really hinders it.

I'll admit XX has some suuuuuper lazy level designs. But...the graphics! They look so good! (So I can forgive how lousy some of the stage designs are.)
